Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, we witness the brothers of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, plotting against him out of jealousy and envy. Their father Yaʿqūb (Jacob), peace be upon him, had shown special love and affection to Yusuf due to his noble character, his prophethood, and the blessed dream he had seen. This deep love ignited the fire of envy in the hearts of his half-brothers, and they conspired to remove him from the picture entirely.
They said to one another: "Kill Yusuf or cast him into some distant, unknown land far from any habitation, so that your father's face — his complete attention, love, and care — may be exclusively directed toward you, and you may become after that a righteous people."
Their plan was built on a twisted logic: they believed that by eliminating Yusuf, they would secure their father's undivided love. They even tried to soothe their consciences by promising to repent afterward — claiming they would become "righteous people" after committing this heinous act. This reveals a dangerous self-deception: planning a grave sin while intending to "repent" later, as if repentance could be used as a license to sin.
The scholars have noted that their statement "we will become righteous after that" carries two possible meanings: either they meant they would repent and seek Allah's forgiveness after their crime, or they meant that their father's relationship with them would improve and they would become honored in his sight. Either way, their reasoning was flawed and their plan was born of pure envy — a disease that destroys the heart and blinds one to right and wrong.
A Call to Reflection and Guidance:
Dear reader, reflect deeply on this story. Envy is a destructive fire that burned the hearts of these brothers and led them to contemplate the murder of their own innocent brother — a prophet of Allah! How many families have been torn apart by jealousy? How many relationships have been destroyed because one person could not bear to see goodness in another?
Islam teaches us to purify our hearts from envy and to celebrate the blessings Allah has given to others. When you see someone favored with knowledge, wealth, status, or love, do not let Shaytan whisper poison into your heart. Instead, make duʿā for them and ask Allah to grant you similar or better blessings. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not envy one another, do not hate one another, and be servants of Allah as brothers."
Moreover, never deceive yourself by planning to sin with the intention of repenting afterward. Repentance is a great door of mercy opened by Allah, but it is not a license to commit sins deliberately. The righteous companions and scholars have always feared that their repentance might not be accepted, and they never used it as an excuse to sin.
The story of Yusuf teaches us that Allah's plan prevails over all human schemes. Despite the brothers' evil plot, Allah elevated Yusuf to the highest ranks in this world and the Hereafter. So trust in Allah, keep your heart pure, and know that what Allah has written for you will always reach you — no matter how others may try to block your path. And if you have ever wronged someone out of envy or jealousy, hasten to make amends, seek forgiveness, and turn back to Allah before it is too late. Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful, and He loves those who repent and purify their hearts.
