Word Meanings:
- لَوْلَا أُنزِلَ عَلَيْهِ آيَةٌ – "Why was not a sign sent down upon him?" – This refers to the disbelievers' demand for a tangible, visible miracle (like the staff of Moses or the healing of Jesus) to prove the Prophet's truthfulness.
- يُضِلُّ – "Leads astray" – meaning: withholds guidance from those who persist in arrogance and stubbornness.
- أَنَابَ – "Turns back" – meaning: returns to Allah with sincere repentance, humility, and obedience.
Explanation of the Verse:
The disbelievers of Makkah, out of obstinacy rather than genuine seeking of truth, kept demanding: "Why hasn't a visible, physical miracle been sent down upon Muhammad from his Lord?" They wanted something spectacular—like a mountain turned to gold, or a river bursting forth—as if the Qur'an itself, with its unmatched eloquence and profound guidance, was not miracle enough.
Allah instructs His Prophet to answer them with a profound truth: "Say: Indeed, Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides to Himself whoever turns back to Him."
This is a decisive refutation of their demand. Guidance is not a matter of theatrical miracles; it is a matter of the heart. If a person is determined to disbelieve, no miracle—no matter how great—will change their state. The people of Thamud saw the she-camel emerge from the rock, yet they still rejected and were destroyed. The Pharaoh witnessed countless signs through Moses, yet his arrogance only increased. Miracles do not force faith; they only serve as evidence for those who are willing to see.
Allah, in His perfect wisdom and justice, leaves in misguidance those who choose stubbornness and arrogance, because they have sealed their own hearts. But for those who turn to Him—who humble themselves, repent sincerely, and seek His pleasure—He opens the doors of guidance and illuminates their path, regardless of whether they have seen any physical miracle or not.
The greatest miracle is already before them: the Qur'an, a living, eternal sign that speaks to the intellect, the heart, and the soul. The one who truly seeks truth will find in it everything they need.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, do not be like those who keep demanding signs while ignoring the sign that is already in front of them. The Qur'an is the eternal miracle of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ—a book that has challenged humanity for over fourteen centuries to produce even a single chapter like it, and none have succeeded.
Open your heart, turn back to your Lord in sincere repentance, and you will find that He Himself will guide you, illuminate your path, and grant you a peace that no physical miracle could ever provide. The door of guidance is open for every soul that knocks with sincerity. Do not let pride or stubbornness close it upon yourself.
