Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Bis-Sayyi'ah" (with the evil): Here it refers to punishment and calamity.
- "Al-Hasanah" (the good): Here it refers to mercy, well-being, and forgiveness.
- "Al-Mathulat" (the exemplary punishments): Plural of "mathulah," meaning the severe punishments and destructive retributions that befell previous nations who denied the truth.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The disbelievers, out of mockery and arrogance, challenge you, O Messenger, by asking you to hasten the punishment upon them before the mercy and good that you promise them. They say, "Bring us what you threaten us with if you are truthful!" Yet they have before them the striking examples of nations who came before them — 'Ad, Thamud, and the people of Nuh — who denied their messengers and were destroyed by Allah's punishment. These historical lessons stand as clear warnings, so why do they not take heed and reflect?
This verse reveals the depth of their stubbornness: they ask for evil before good, for destruction before mercy, even though the fate of those before them is well known. It is as if they are blind to the signs of history.
Then Allah turns to you, O Messenger, with a profound reassurance about His nature. Indeed, your Lord is full of forgiveness for people despite their wrongdoing. He does not hasten to punish them; rather, He opens the door of repentance wide, inviting them to turn back to Him even while they continue to wrong themselves through sin and disbelief. His mercy precedes His wrath, and His patience is immense — He gives them time, hoping they will return to Him.
Yet, at the same time, your Lord is severe in punishment. For those who persist in their arrogance, who refuse to repent and continue in their transgression, His retribution is mighty and inescapable. His forgiveness is not a sign of weakness, nor is His patience a lack of awareness — rather, He is both the Most Forgiving and the Severe in Punishment.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, see how this verse beautifully balances hope and fear. Allah does not close the door of mercy on you no matter how much you have wronged yourself — even if your sins reach the heavens, His forgiveness is greater. But do not mistake His patience for negligence; His punishment is severe for those who persist in disbelief and arrogance. So hasten to His mercy before His punishment comes, and let the fate of past nations be a lesson that awakens your heart. The same Allah who destroyed the tyrants of old is the One who forgives the repentant sinner today. Which path will you choose? The path of those who sought to hasten punishment and were destroyed, or the path of those who sought His forgiveness and found it?
