Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- "Lawlā" (لولا): "Why not" or "If only" – used here as a word of reproach and stubborn demand.
- "Āyah" (آية): A sign, miracle, or proof. Here, the disbelievers demand a tangible, physical miracle.
- "Mundhir" (منذر): A warner – one who cautions people against the consequences of their actions.
- "Hād" (هادٍ): A guide – one who leads people to the right path.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah addresses the persistent stubbornness of the disbelievers of Makkah. Out of arrogance and defiance, they kept demanding: *"Why hasn't a miracle been sent down to him from his Lord?"* They wanted something sensational and physical – like the staff of Moses turning into a serpent, or the she-camel of Salih, or even the raising of the dead as Jesus did. They thought that such a display would prove the truth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), yet their demand was not born of sincere inquiry but of obstinate rejection.
Allah responds to their challenge with a profound and calming truth. He tells His Prophet: *"You are only a warner."* Your duty is not to produce miracles on demand; your duty is to deliver the message, to warn humanity of the consequences of their choices, and to call them back to their Creator. The miracles are in Allah's hands alone, and He grants them as He wills, in His perfect wisdom and timing.
Then comes a beautiful and reassuring statement: *"And for every people there is a guide."* This means that no nation has ever been left without divine guidance. Every community throughout history has received a prophet or a messenger to lead them out of darkness and into light. For the Arabs, that guide was Muhammad (peace be upon him) – the final and greatest of all guides, sent as a mercy to all of creation.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder this: The disbelievers of old demanded miracles, yet when the greatest miracle – the Qur'an itself, a book of unmatched eloquence and wisdom – was placed before them, they turned away. The true miracle is not in the spectacular, but in the transformative. The Qur'an has changed hearts, built civilizations, and illuminated minds for over fourteen centuries. It is a living miracle that continues to guide humanity.
And you, today, have been given that same guide. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is your guide, and the Qur'an is your light. Do not wait for a sign – the sign is already here. Open your heart, reflect on its verses, and let it lead you to the eternal success that awaits those who believe and do good. The door of guidance is open, and the guide is calling you. Will you answer?
