Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Bijahalah (بِجَهَالَةٍ): In a state of ignorance — meaning they committed the sin without fully comprehending its grave consequences, even if they knew it was prohibited. Every sinner, whether negligent or deliberate, falls under this description because they failed to realize the true magnitude of Allah's displeasure.
  • Thumma Tabu (ثُمَّ تَابُوا): Then they repented — turning back to Allah with sincere remorse and a firm resolve to abandon the sin.
  • Wa Aslahu (وَأَصْلَحُوا): And they mended their ways — rectifying their hearts, their deeds, and their relationship with Allah, making amends for the corruption they had caused.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Then, O Messenger, your Lord — despite His immense power and majesty — extends His boundless mercy to those who committed evil out of ignorance, not fully grasping the weight of their transgression or the severity of His displeasure. This includes every sinner, whether they erred unintentionally or sinned deliberately, for in truth, anyone who disobeys Allah while knowing His commandments yet still falls into sin is considered ignorant in this regard — ignorant of the true consequences and the enormity of defying their Creator.

But the door of repentance is never closed. For those who, after falling into sin, turn back to their Lord with sincere hearts, seeking His forgiveness, and then follow that repentance with righteous action — reforming their souls, purifying their intentions, and correcting their deeds — Allah's promise is certain. Indeed, your Lord, after their repentance and reformation, is Most Forgiving, pardoning their sins completely, and Most Merciful, showering them with His compassion and rewarding their sincere return with His grace.

This verse is a radiant beacon of hope for every soul that has stumbled. It teaches us that no matter how far we have fallen, no matter how many times we have erred, Allah's mercy is vaster than our sins. The key is sincere repentance — a repentance that transforms us, that moves us from darkness to light, from corruption to righteousness. So never despair of Allah's mercy, for He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful, and He delights in the return of His servant who calls out to Him in humility and truth.
