Word Meanings:

  • Ummatan (أُمَّةً): A leader, an exemplar, or a community in himself—one who embodies all virtues and serves as a model for others.
  • Qānitan (قَانِتًا): Devoutly obedient, submissive, and constantly engaged in worship and obedience to Allah.
  • Ḥanīfan (حَنِيفًا): One who turns away from all falsehood and deviates from every corrupted belief, inclining solely toward the pure monotheistic faith (Islam).

Tafsir (Interpretation):

Allah, the Exalted, praises His beloved Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him) with a description that elevates him to an unparalleled rank. He was *"an ummah"*—meaning that he alone, by himself, was like a whole nation, because he combined within his character every noble quality, every virtue of goodness, and every form of righteousness that a community of believers would collectively possess. He was a complete embodiment of faith, patience, gratitude, and devotion.

He was *"qānitan lillah"*—continuously obedient to Allah, submitting his entire being to His command, never wavering in his servitude. His obedience was not occasional or intermittent; it was a constant state of his heart, tongue, and limbs. He was *"ḥanīfan"*—one who turned away from all false religions and deviated from every path of misguidance, inclining solely toward the pure, pristine faith of monotheism (Tawḥīd). He rejected all forms of polytheism, idolatry, and deviation, and he never associated partners with Allah—not for a single moment of his life.

Allah then clarifies that Ibrahim was *"not from the polytheists"*—refuting the false claim of the Quraysh, who arrogantly asserted that they were followers of his religion. Allah declares this claim utterly false, for Ibrahim was completely free from any form of shirk (associating partners with Allah), while the Quraysh were steeped in idol worship. His entire life was a testament to pure monotheism, and his legacy is one of unwavering submission to the One True God.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a profound call to every believer to examine their own relationship with Allah. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was a single man who became a "nation" because of his sincerity, his devotion, and his steadfastness. You too, dear reader, can achieve greatness in the sight of Allah—not through numbers or followers, but through the quality of your faith and the purity of your devotion. You do not need a large community to be righteous; you can be an "ummah" yourself by embodying the virtues of Ibrahim: obedience to Allah, turning away from falsehood, and remaining firm upon monotheism.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: *"Ibrahim was sufficient as a leader and an exemplar for you."* So let this noble prophet be your role model. In a world filled with distractions, temptations, and calls to polytheism in various forms—whether the worship of wealth, status, or desires—strive to be like Ibrahim: a person whose heart is solely devoted to Allah, who turns away from all that is false, and who never compromises their faith. This is the path of true success, both in this life and the Hereafter. May Allah make us among those who follow the pure, monotheistic creed of Ibrahim, and may He grant us steadfastness upon it until we meet Him.

📜 Verse 118-122 — An-Nahl

And to those who are Jews We have prohibited that which We related to you before. And We did not wrong them [thereby], but they were wronging themselves.
Then, indeed your Lord, to those who have done wrong out of ignorance and then repent after that and correct themselves - indeed, your Lord, thereafter, is Forgiving and Merciful.
Indeed, Abraham was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allah, inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allah.
[He was] grateful for His favors. Allah chose him and guided him to a straight path.
And We gave him good in this world, and indeed, in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous.
