Word Meanings:

  • Ilahukum (إِلَٰهُكُمْ): Your deity, the One who deserves worship.
  • Wahid (وَاحِدٌ): One, unique, without any partner or associate.
  • Munkirah (مُنكِرَةٌ): Denying, rejecting, or refusing to acknowledge the truth.
  • Mustakbirun (مُسْتَكْبِرُونَ): Arrogant, haughty, those who refuse to submit out of pride.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Most High, declares in this verse the foundational truth of all existence: "Your God is one God." This is the very essence of Islam — the absolute oneness of the Creator, who alone deserves all worship, devotion, and submission. There is no deity worthy of worship except Him, and He has no partners, no equals, and no rivals. This statement is not merely a theological claim; it is the natural truth that every soul instinctively recognizes, and it is the message brought by every prophet from Adam to Muhammad (peace be upon them all).

Then Allah describes the condition of those who reject this truth: "But those who do not believe in the Hereafter — their hearts are denying, and they are arrogant." The connection between disbelief in the Hereafter and the denial of God's oneness is profound. When a person does not believe that they will be resurrected and held accountable for their deeds, they lose the very motivation that drives them to accept the truth. Their hearts become hardened, and they refuse to acknowledge the reality of their Creator because they do not fear His punishment nor hope for His reward. They live as if this worldly life is all that matters, and so they reject the very idea of a God who commands, prohibits, and will judge.

Moreover, their denial is coupled with arrogance. They are too proud to bow their heads in submission to the truth. They see themselves as self-sufficient, and they refuse to accept that there is a Being greater than them who deserves their worship and obedience. This arrogance is the same trait that led Satan to refuse Allah's command to prostrate to Adam — pride prevents the heart from accepting guidance.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, reflect on the simplicity and clarity of this verse. The message is not complicated: your God is one. The entire universe, with its perfect order and harmony, testifies to the oneness of its Creator. The sun rises and sets, the seasons change, and every living being follows its nature — all pointing to a single, all-powerful Designer. Why, then, do some hearts deny this obvious truth? Because they do not believe in the Hereafter, and so they see no reason to submit. They live for today alone, and their pride blinds them to the reality of their own weakness and need.

But you, O seeker of truth, have been blessed with a heart that can see beyond this temporary world. You know that there is a Day when every soul will stand before its Lord and be asked about its deeds. Let this knowledge soften your heart and humble your spirit. Do not let arrogance prevent you from accepting the truth, for the gates of mercy are wide open for those who submit. Embrace the oneness of Allah, worship Him alone, and you will find peace in this life and success in the next. The path is clear, and the call is gentle: come to the worship of the One God, and you will never be lost again.

And those they invoke other than Allah create nothing, and they [themselves] are created.
21أَمْوَاتٌ غَيْرُ أَحْيَاءٍ ۖ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ أَيَّانَ يُبْعَثُونَ
They are, [in fact], dead, not alive, and they do not perceive when they will be resurrected.
Your god is one God. But those who do not believe in the Hereafter - their hearts are disapproving, and they are arrogant.
Assuredly, Allah knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, He does not like the arrogant.
24وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُم مَّاذَا أَنزَلَ رَبُّكُمْ ۙ قَالُوا أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ
And when it is said to them, "What has your Lord sent down?" They say, "Legends of the former peoples,"
