Word Meanings:
- عَلَىٰ تَخَوُّفٍ (upon gradual diminishment/fear): It means taking them gradually through the loss of wealth, lives, and provisions, or seizing them while they are in a state of fear and anticipation of punishment, decreasing them little by little until they perish.
Explanation of the Verse:
After warning the disbelievers of sudden punishment, Allah now mentions another form of His justice: "Or that He will seize them upon gradual diminishment" — meaning, He may take them through the slow erosion of their blessings, wealth, health, and security, so that they witness their strength and resources dwindling before their very eyes. This is a more subtle and prolonged form of punishment, one that instills constant fear and anxiety, as they see their end approaching step by step.
This verse follows the previous warnings about being seized suddenly or from an unexpected direction. Here, Allah clarifies that even if they are not struck down all at once, they are not safe from a gradual decline — a loss of their worldly comforts, a reduction in their provisions, a weakening of their power, until they are brought to ruin. No one can escape Allah's grasp, whether the punishment comes swiftly or slowly.
Then Allah concludes with a profound statement of mercy: "Indeed, your Lord is Most Kind and Most Merciful." This is not a contradiction — rather, it is the very reason why punishment is delayed or gradual. Allah, in His mercy, gives His servants time to reflect, repent, and return to Him. He does not hasten to punish, even when they deserve it. His kindness is shown in granting respite, and His mercy is manifested in every opportunity He gives for correction and reform.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is this verse in balancing fear and hope! The disbelievers are warned that they cannot escape Allah's justice — whether sudden or gradual — yet immediately after, Allah reminds us of His gentleness and mercy. This is the essence of Islamic faith: we fear Allah's punishment, but we never despair of His mercy.
If you are reading this and feel distant from Allah, know that His mercy is greater than your sins. The very fact that you are still alive, still breathing, still able to read these words — that is Allah's kindness giving you another chance. He could have taken you at any moment, but He didn't. Why? Because He is *Ra'uf* (Most Kind) and *Rahim* (Most Merciful). He wants you to turn back to Him before it is too late.
Do not wait for the gradual decline of your blessings to wake you up. Do not wait for fear to grip your heart. Respond to His mercy now — with sincere repentance, with prayer, with gratitude. For the door of His mercy is always open, and He is always ready to forgive.
