Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Fasluki" (فاسلكي): Enter upon and traverse the paths.
- "Dhululan" (ذُلُلًا): Made submissive, easy, and smooth — paths that are humbled and facilitated for the bee to travel through.
- "Sharāb" (شَرَابٌ): A drink — here referring to honey, which is a liquid nourishment.
- "Shifā'" (شِفَاءٌ): Healing or cure — a remedy for ailments.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Allah commanded the bee to dwell in mountains, trees, and trellises, He then instructed it: *"Then eat from all the fruits"* — meaning, consume from the various blossoms and fruits of the earth, whether sweet, sour, or bitter, as sustenance provided by your Lord. *"And follow the ways of your Lord made easy"* — meaning, travel the paths your Lord has inspired you to take, paths that have been made smooth and submissive for you, so that you do not lose your way even when returning from distant places. This is a profound sign of Allah's perfect arrangement: a tiny creature navigating vast landscapes with precision and returning to its hive without error.
Then Allah describes the magnificent outcome: *"There emerges from their bellies a drink of varying colors"* — honey, which comes forth in shades of white, yellow, red, and other hues, depending on the flowers and sources the bees have fed upon. *"In it is healing for mankind"* — this honey contains a cure for people, as it is used to treat various ailments. This does not mean honey cures every disease for every person in every circumstance, but rather it is a healing substance, just as other medicines heal in certain cases and not others. The Prophet ﷺ himself recommended honey for healing, and modern science has confirmed its remarkable medicinal properties, including antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits.
*"Indeed, in that is a sign for a people who reflect"* — In this entire process — the inspiration of the bee, its tireless work, the production of this beneficial substance — there is a clear and powerful proof of Allah's existence, wisdom, and power. Only those who ponder and use their intellect will grasp this sign and draw lessons from it. The one who reflects sees the hand of the Creator in every drop of honey, in every flower visited, and in every path traversed by this humble creature.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and contemplate this miracle. A small insect, no larger than your fingertip, is guided by its Lord to produce a substance that heals the sick, nourishes the weak, and sweetens the lives of millions. Who taught the bee this intricate craft? Who placed within its tiny body the ability to transform nectar into honey? Who gave it the instinct to build hexagonal cells with mathematical precision?
This is not mere coincidence — it is the signature of the Creator, the All-Wise, the All-Knowing. The Qur'an invites you to reflect, to think, and to see the signs of Allah scattered throughout creation. When you taste honey, remember the One who made it. When you see a bee, glorify the One who inspired it. And when you ponder these wonders, let your heart draw closer to Islam, the religion that unveils these truths and guides you to the path of eternal success. Allah has not left you without signs — He has filled the universe with proofs of His mercy and power. Will you not reflect?
