Surah An-Nahl — Verse 92

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Most High, prohibits the believers from breaking their covenants and oaths, drawing a powerful and vivid analogy to warn them against this grave behavior. He says: *"And do not be like the woman who unraveled her spun thread after it had been made strong."* This refers to a foolish woman who labored diligently to spin her wool or cotton into strong, tightly-twisted thread, only to then undo all her hard work, pulling it apart into loose, broken fibers—wasting her effort and gaining nothing but loss.

This striking image serves as a warning against breaking solemn promises. The believer who makes an oath or a covenant and then breaks it is like that woman: they exert effort in building trust and relationships, only to destroy them through betrayal, leaving themselves in a state of ruin and disgrace.

The verse continues: *"You take your oaths as a means of deception among yourselves."* This means that some people use their sworn oaths not as a sincere commitment, but as a tool for treachery—swearing to an agreement when it benefits them, and then abandoning it when they find a group that is more numerous, wealthier, or more powerful. They shift alliances based on worldly gain, betraying those who trusted them. Allah sternly forbids this behavior, as it undermines the very fabric of trust and justice in society.

Then Allah reveals the wisdom behind this test: *"Allah only tests you with it."* He tests His servants by commanding them to fulfill their covenants and forbidding them from breaking them, to see who will remain patient and faithful, and who will succumb to their desires and betray their word. This is a trial of faith and integrity.

Finally, the verse concludes with a powerful reassurance: *"And He will surely make clear to you on the Day of Resurrection that over which you used to differ."* On that Day, Allah will settle all disputes and reveal the truth—who was sincere in their faith and who was deceitful. He will distinguish the truthful from the liars, the righteous from the corrupt, and every person will be recompensed according to their deeds.

A Call to Faithfulness and Integrity:

Dear believer, this verse is a beautiful reminder of the importance of trustworthiness in Islam. Your word is your bond, and your oath is a sacred trust before Allah. When you make a promise, you are not just making a commitment to another person—you are making a commitment before your Lord, Who hears and sees all. Breaking a promise is not merely a social failing; it is a spiritual deficiency that weakens your faith and harms your character.

Imagine the honor of being known as someone who always keeps their word, who is reliable and steadfast, regardless of changing circumstances. This is the character of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who was known as *Al-Amin* (the Trustworthy) even before his prophethood. By fulfilling your covenants, you draw closer to Allah and earn the love and respect of people.

Do not let the lure of worldly gain tempt you to betray your commitments. Wealth and numbers may increase or decrease, but your integrity before Allah is priceless. Allah is testing you to see if you will remain firm on truth and justice, even when it is difficult. And remember, on the Day of Judgment, every secret will be exposed, and every difference will be settled with perfect justice. So strive to be among those who are faithful to their promises, for Allah loves those who fulfill their covenants and rewards them with His mercy and Paradise.
