Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ummatan Wahidah (أمة واحدة): One single nation or community united upon one faith.
- Yudillu (يضل): He leads astray — meaning He abandons one to misguidance as an act of justice.
- Yahdi (يهدي): He guides — meaning He grants success and direction to the truth as an act of grace.
- Latus'alunna (لتسألن): You will surely be questioned — a solemn oath affirming the certainty of accountability.
Tafsir (Explanation):
If Allah had willed it, He could have united all of humanity upon a single path — the path of Islam and true faith — compelling every soul to believe and obey without choice. But His divine wisdom necessitated something else: that human beings be granted free will, so that their faith and deeds would carry true weight and meaning.
Thus, His will operates in perfect harmony with His justice and His grace. He leads astray those whom He knows — by His eternal knowledge — have chosen falsehood and stubbornly preferred error over truth. This is not an act of oppression, but a just consequence of their own inclination. And He guides those whom He knows have sincerely sought the truth and preferred it, granting them His grace and facilitation. In this way, His justice is never compromised, and His bounty is never withheld from those who deserve it.
Know with certainty, O servant of Allah, that you will be questioned on the Day of Resurrection — not for information, but for accountability and rebuke. You will be asked about every deed you performed in this worldly life: every obligation you fulfilled or neglected, every prohibition you honored or violated, every word you spoke, and every step you took. Nothing will be overlooked, and nothing will be forgotten.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse awakens the heart to a profound reality: your life is not a random accident, and your deeds are not without consequence. The One who created you and gave you choice will not leave you unchecked. He has shown you the path of guidance and the path of error, and He has left the choice in your hands — not because He is unaware, but because He wants your faith to be genuine, your obedience to be voluntary, and your reward to be immense.
So seize this precious moment before the Day when questions will be asked and accounts will be settled. Turn to your Lord with a sincere heart, seek His guidance, and let every action you take be one you would be proud to present before Him. For He is Most Merciful to those who return to Him, and His door of repentance is open until the very last breath. Do not delay — for the journey is long, and the destination is eternal.
