Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Subhana (سُبْحَانَ): Declaring Allah free from every imperfection and deficiency, and exalting Him above all that does not befit His majesty.
- Asra (أَسْرَىٰ): To journey by night; specifically, to travel during a portion of the night.
- Al-Masjid al-Haram: The Sacred Mosque in Makkah, surrounding the Ka'bah. Some scholars also consider the entire sanctuary of Makkah as part of this sacred precinct.
- Al-Masjid al-Aqsa: The Farthest Mosque, located in Jerusalem (Bayt al-Maqdis). It was called "the farthest" because of its great distance from the Sacred Mosque — a journey of about a month — and because it was the farthest place of worship that was revered and visited for pilgrimage in the earth at that time.
- Barakna (بَارَكْنَا): We placed blessings — both spiritual and material — around it.
Explanation of the Verse:
Glorified and exalted is Allah, free from every imperfection, for His infinite power that no one else possesses. There is no deity worthy of worship but Him, and no Lord besides Him. It is He who transported His servant and Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), by body and soul, in a state of wakefulness — not in a dream — during a portion of the night, from the Sacred Mosque in Makkah to the Farthest Mosque in Jerusalem. Around that blessed mosque, Allah placed abundant blessings: in its fruits, crops, and provisions, and more profoundly, in making it a dwelling place for many of His prophets and a land where divine revelations and sacred laws were sent down. This journey was not merely for travel; it was to show Muhammad (peace be upon him) some of Allah's mighty signs and overwhelming proofs of His oneness and power — wonders that no human eye had ever witnessed and no mind could have imagined. Indeed, Allah alone is the All-Hearing, who hears every sound without exception, and the All-Seeing, who observes every visible thing, and He will reward each soul according to what it deserves in this life and the Hereafter.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This magnificent verse invites every believer to pause and reflect on the boundless power of Allah. The One who transported His beloved Prophet across such a vast distance in a single portion of the night is the same Lord who hears your whispered prayers and sees your silent tears. If He could take His servant on this miraculous journey to show him His signs, then know that nothing is impossible for Him. Your own journey through life — with its trials and tribulations — is also under His watchful care. He who honoured His Prophet with this great miracle is the same Lord who promises to be with you when you call upon Him. So raise your hands in supplication with certainty, for the All-Hearing and All-Seeing is never far from those who seek Him. Let the story of Al-Isra fill your heart with awe and love for a Lord whose power knows no bounds and whose mercy encompasses all things.
