Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yakhsifa (يخسف): To cause the earth to swallow something or someone, sinking them into the ground.
- Jānib al-barr (جانب البر): The side or edge of the land, as opposed to the sea.
- Ḥāṣiban (حاصب): A violent wind that hurls stones and pebbles, or a rain of stones from the sky.
- Wakīlan (وكيلًا): A protector, guardian, or one who manages affairs on behalf of another.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O people, after Allah has saved you from the perils of the sea and brought you safely to land, do you then feel completely secure from His punishment? Are you so heedless that you forget His power over you on the dry land as well? Do you not fear that He could cause the very ground beneath your feet to cave in and swallow you whole, just as He did with Qārūn (Korah) when the earth opened up and engulfed him? Or that He might send upon you a storm of stones from the sky—a crushing rain of pebbles and rocks—just as He destroyed the people of Lot with a shower of brimstone? And if such punishment were to strike you, you would find no one to protect you, no guardian to shield you, and no intercessor to turn it away. Neither your wealth, nor your status, nor your idols, nor your allies could avail you in the least. You would be utterly helpless, with no refuge and no savior.
Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a profound call to awaken the heart from the slumber of heedlessness. It reminds us that Allah's mercy is vast, but His justice is equally real. When we board a ship and it sails smoothly, or when we travel by land and reach our destination safely, we often take these blessings for granted—as if they are our right, not His favor. Yet the very ground we walk on, the air we breathe, and the sky above us are all under His command. He can transform the familiar into a source of trial in an instant.
So, dear reader, let this be a moment of reflection: if you have ever been saved from danger—a storm, an accident, an illness—know that it was Allah who rescued you. And if He can save, He can also punish. But His door of repentance is always open. Do not wait until the punishment comes to seek Him; rather, turn to Him now, in gratitude and humility. The One who controls the land and the sea, the wind and the stone, is the same One who hears your whispered prayer. Make Him your Wakīl—your Guardian and Protector—and you will never fear what the earth or the sky may bring. For whoever places their trust in Allah, He is sufficient, and no force in creation can harm them without His leave.
