Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • الضر (al-ḍurr): Hardship, distress, or harm — here specifically referring to the danger of drowning.
  • ضل (ḍalla): To disappear, vanish, or be lost from one's mind and awareness.
  • نجاكم (najjākum): He saved you and delivered you from danger.
  • أعرضتم (aʿraḍtum): You turned away — meaning you turned your backs on faith and gratitude.
  • كفورًا (kafūrā): Extremely ungrateful, persistently denying and disregarding Allah's blessings.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Imagine yourself on a vast ocean, waves crashing from every direction, the ship trembling beneath your feet, and death staring you in the face. In that terrifying moment, something remarkable happens: every idol, every false god, every being you used to call upon simply vanishes from your mind. You forget them all. Your heart instinctively cries out to One Being alone — Allah, the Almighty, the Only Savior. You promise Him everything, you call upon Him with sincerity you never showed before.

This is the scene Allah describes in this verse. When hardship strikes you at sea and you fear drowning, all those you used to worship and invoke disappear from your thoughts — only Allah remains in your consciousness. You call upon Him alone, with complete sincerity, because you know deep down that no idol, no statue, no human being can save you from the raging sea. Only the Creator of the sea and the land can.

And then comes the moment of mercy: Allah answers your call. He calms the waves, guides you safely to shore, and delivers you from certain death. But what happens next? The moment your feet touch solid ground, you turn away. You forget the One who saved you. You return to your old ways, your idols, your arrogance, your ingratitude. It is as if the sea never happened, as if the promise you made in your moment of desperation meant nothing.

This is the nature of the human being — extremely ungrateful, quick to forget blessings, slow to show gratitude. The verse concludes with a profound truth: "And ever is man ungrateful." This is not just about the disbelievers of Makkah; it is a warning to all of us. How often do we remember Allah in times of crisis, only to forget Him in times of ease? How often do we cry out to Him when we are in need, then neglect His remembrance when things go well?

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own soul. Do you recognize yourself in this description? When calamity strikes — illness, financial loss, fear, or danger — your heart naturally turns to Allah. But when the calamity passes and life returns to normal, do you maintain that connection? Do you remain grateful, humble, and obedient?

The Qur'an is not merely telling us a story; it is inviting us to be better than this. It is calling us to be among those who remember Allah in times of ease as well as in times of hardship. The true believer is the one whose gratitude is constant, whose remembrance of Allah is not dependent on circumstances.

Let this verse inspire you to thank Allah every single day — for the air you breathe, the food you eat, the safety you enjoy, the family you love. Do not wait for a storm to remind you of your need for Him. Be among those who say, "My Lord, I am grateful for Your countless blessings, and I will never forget Your favor upon me."

And if you have ever been saved from a difficulty — and indeed, every one of us has been saved from countless difficulties we may not even realize — then let that be a reason to draw closer to Allah, not to turn away from Him. For He is the One who says, "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]" (Ibrahim 14:7).

📜 Verse 65-69 — Al-Isra

Indeed, over My [believing] servants there is for you no authority. And sufficient is your Lord as Disposer of affairs.
It is your Lord who drives the ship for you through the sea that you may seek of His bounty. Indeed, He is ever, to you, Merciful.
And when adversity touches you at sea, lost are [all] those you invoke except for Him. But when He delivers you to the land, you turn away [from Him]. And ever is man ungrateful.
Then do you feel secure that [instead] He will not cause a part of the land to swallow you or send against you a storm of stones? Then you would not find for yourselves an advocate.
Or do you feel secure that He will not send you back into the sea another time and send upon you a hurricane of wind and drown you for what you denied? Then you would not find for yourselves against Us an avenger.
