📖 English Meaning
Or do you feel secure that He will not send you back into the sea another time and send upon you a hurricane of wind and drown you for what you denied? Then you would not find for yourselves against Us an avenger.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Qāsifan (قاصفًا): A violent, destructive wind that breaks and shatters everything in its path—so powerful it snaps trees and demolishes structures.
  • Tabī‘an (تبيعًا): A supporter, avenger, or one who seeks retribution on your behalf—someone to hold Us accountable or demand justice for you.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O humanity, after all the signs of Allah’s power and mercy you have witnessed—especially His saving you from the perils of the sea—do you still feel secure that He will not cause you to return to that very ocean once again? Do you truly believe you have escaped His grasp?

Think deeply: if He wills, He can send you back to the sea, and then unleash upon you a hurricane-like wind—a crushing, shattering force that breaks ships like twigs and overwhelms you with towering waves. You would drown, not as an act of injustice, but as a direct consequence of your own ingratitude and disbelief (kufr). You rejected His favors, denied His signs, and turned away from His guidance—so how could you feel safe from His retribution?

And then, in that moment of utter destruction, you would find no one—no helper, no intercessor, no avenger—to pursue Us on your behalf. There would be no one to demand justice against Allah, for He is absolutely just, and your punishment would be perfectly deserved. You would have no claim against Him, no recourse, and no escape from His decree.

This verse is a profound call to self-reflection. It strips away every false sense of security and reminds us that our very existence—our breath, our safety, our journeys across land and sea—depends entirely on Allah’s mercy. When you board a ship and the waves rise, who protects you? When you reach the shore safely, who brought you back? It is Allah alone. So why do we forget Him in times of ease, only to remember Him in times of distress?

A Call to the Heart:

Dear reader, this ayah is not merely a warning—it is an invitation. It invites you to recognize the Hand of Allah in every moment of your life. The same Lord who saved you from the depths of the sea is the One who asks: *Do you feel secure from Me?* The answer should humble you. Let it awaken in you a living, breathing consciousness of Allah—a gratitude that fills your heart, a humility that softens your soul, and a love that draws you closer to Him. For the One who holds the winds and the waves in His command is the One who hears your whispered prayers and knows the secrets of your heart. Turn to Him now, before the waves of this world and the next overwhelm you. He is Al-Ghafūr (The All-Forgiving), Ar-Raḥīm (The Most Merciful)—and His door is always open for those who return to Him.

📜 Verse 67-71 — Al-Isra

And when adversity touches you at sea, lost are [all] those you invoke except for Him. But when He delivers you to the land, you turn away [from Him]. And ever is man ungrateful.
Then do you feel secure that [instead] He will not cause a part of the land to swallow you or send against you a storm of stones? Then you would not find for yourselves an advocate.
Or do you feel secure that He will not send you back into the sea another time and send upon you a hurricane of wind and drown you for what you denied? Then you would not find for yourselves against Us an avenger.
And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.
[Mention, O Muhammad], the Day We will call forth every people with their record [of deeds]. Then whoever is given his record in his right hand - those will read their records, and injustice will not be done to them, [even] as much as a thread [inside the date seed].
