Tafsir (Explanation):
Both of these two gardens — which belonged to the man who was blessed with wealth and children, yet became arrogant and denied the Hereafter — bore their fruits in full abundance. Each garden produced dates, grapes, and crops, and neither fell short in the least. Nothing was deficient, nothing was withheld; rather, every branch and vine yielded its harvest perfectly and completely, as if the earth itself was eager to honor its owner.
And We — out of Our grace and mercy — caused a flowing river to gush forth between the two gardens, running through their midst. This river not only watered the trees and crops with ease, but also added to the beauty and splendor of the scene, making the gardens a breathtaking sight of lush greenery, flowing water, and abundant fruit.
This verse paints a vivid picture of divine generosity: the gardens were not merely productive — they were overflowing with blessing. The owner had done nothing to earn this except that Allah had favored him. Yet, despite this overwhelming kindness, he turned to his companion and said: *"I am greater than you in wealth and mightier in numbers"* (18:34). He forgot the Giver, and focused only on the gift.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: How often does Allah shower us with blessings — health, wealth, family, comfort — and yet we attribute it all to our own efforts, or worse, use it to look down on others? This man’s gardens were a test, not a trophy. When we see our provisions flowing like that river between the trees, let us remember that every blessing is a loan from Allah, and every good thing we enjoy is a reason to thank Him, not to boast.
The river that ran between the gardens was a sign of Allah’s mercy — but the man’s heart was dry, harder than the earth that yielded its fruits. Let your heart be softer than the soil, so that when blessings come, they grow into gratitude, and when trials come, they grow into patience. For the One who split the earth to bring forth water can also split the heart to bring forth faith — if only we ask Him.
