Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Thamar (ثَمَرٌ): Fruits and produce from the trees, and by extension, abundant wealth and possessions.
  • Yuhāwiruhu (يُحَاوِرُهُ): Engaging in conversation, debating, or exchanging words with him.
  • Aʿazzu nafaran (أَعَزُّ نَفَرًا): More powerful in terms of clan, supporters, and helpers.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse takes us into the heart of a powerful story—a lesson wrapped in the lives of two men. One was a believer, humble and God-conscious; the other was a disbeliever, blessed with immense wealth and two magnificent gardens. The verse tells us that this wealthy man also possessed other fruits and properties beyond the gardens—an abundance that filled his life with comfort and pride.

Yet, instead of gratitude, his wealth bred arrogance. While conversing with his believing companion, he boasted: *"I am greater than you in wealth and mightier in numbers of followers."* He pointed to his money, his supporters, his clan, and his status—as if these were the ultimate measures of success. His words were not just a comparison; they were a challenge, a declaration that his worldly riches made him superior and secure.

Notice the context: he said this *while* conversing with his companion—meaning, in the midst of a discussion about faith and the Hereafter. When the believer likely reminded him of God, of accountability, and of the fleeting nature of this world, the rich man responded with pride. He leaned on his material blessings as if they were proof of his righteousness or his invincibility.

This is a timeless human flaw. When wealth, status, or numbers fill our hearts, we can easily forget that all of it is a trust from Allah—a test, not a trophy. The rich man’s words reveal a heart attached to the temporary, blind to the eternal. He saw his gardens, his gold, and his people, but he did not see the One who gave them all.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and ask yourself: What do you lean on when you feel secure? Is it your bank account, your job, your family name, or your circle of friends? These are blessings from Allah, but they are not guarantees. The One who gave can take away in an instant. The true honor lies not in how much you own, but in how much you owe—to your Creator, in gratitude and obedience.

This verse invites you to be like the believer in the story: humble, wise, and aware that true strength is in faith, not in fortune. Let your wealth be a means of goodness, not a source of pride. Let your supporters be those who bring you closer to Allah, not those who inflate your ego. For on the Day when gardens and gold will be of no avail, only a sound heart and sincere deeds will speak for you.

So, do not envy the rich who boast, and do not despise the poor who believe. The scales of Allah are different from the scales of men. And the most honored among you in His sight is the one who is most righteous—not the one who is most wealthy.

📜 Verse 32-36 — Al-Kahf

And present to them an example of two men: We granted to one of them two gardens of grapevines, and We bordered them with palm trees and placed between them [fields of] crops.
Each of the two gardens produced its fruit and did not fall short thereof in anything. And We caused to gush forth within them a river.
And he had fruit, so he said to his companion while he was conversing with him, "I am greater than you in wealth and mightier in [numbers of] men."
And he entered his garden while he was unjust to himself. He said, "I do not think that this will perish - ever.
And I do not think the Hour will occur. And even if I should be brought back to my Lord, I will surely find better than this as a return."
