Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse portrays a powerful and sobering scene from the story of two men mentioned in Surah Al-Kahf — one blessed with abundant wealth and two magnificent gardens, and the other a poor believer. The wealthy man, accompanied by his believing companion, entered his garden while his heart was clouded with arrogance and self-deception. He was wronging his own soul — not merely by pride in his possessions, but by a deeper spiritual corruption: disbelief in the Hereafter and a false sense of eternal security.
As he walked through his lush orchards, surrounded by palm trees and vines heavy with fruit, he was overwhelmed by admiration for what he owned. In his vanity, he declared: "I do not think this will ever perish!" He convinced himself that his garden was immune to decay, that his wealth was beyond the reach of time, and that no calamity could ever touch it. His long-term hopes and worldly attachments blinded him to the reality that every blessing in this life is temporary and subject to the will of Allah.
This statement reveals the depth of his self-deception. He did not merely express hope — he asserted certainty in the permanence of his worldly possessions. This is a dangerous state of mind that afflicts many who are engrossed in material success: they begin to feel invincible, forgetting that the One who granted them everything can take it all away in an instant.
The believer, as we see in the following verses, responds with wisdom and reminds him of the true Source of all blessings. But this verse alone carries a profound lesson for every reader: wealth, health, youth, and every comfort we enjoy are trusts from Allah, not permanent possessions. The garden that this man was so proud of eventually became a barren wasteland — a vivid reminder that no matter how strong our walls, how deep our roots, or how abundant our harvest, everything in this world is fleeting.
Dear reader, let this scene be a mirror for your own heart. Do you ever find yourself feeling overly secure in your wealth, your health, or your position? Do you sometimes act as if this world will never end? The Quran presents this story not merely as history, but as a timeless warning — and an invitation to place your true trust in Allah, the Everlasting, the One whose kingdom never perishes. For the believer, the real garden is not the one planted in the earth, but the one prepared in Paradise for those who are grateful and humble. That garden, by the mercy of Allah, will never fade, never wither, and never end.
