Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "بَعْدَهَا" (after this): meaning after this particular incident or question.
  • "فَلَا تُصَاحِبْنِي" (then do not accompany me): i.e., part ways with me and leave me.
  • "مِن لَّدُنِّي" (from me / on my part): meaning from my side or with regard to me.
  • "عُذْرًا" (an excuse): a justification or reason that makes separation acceptable.

Tafsir (Explanation):

At this moment, Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) realized that his repeated questioning had crossed the limit set by his wise companion. He had been told clearly from the beginning: *"Indeed, you will never be able to have patience with me"* (18:67), and yet he had asked twice, breaking his promise each time. Now, after the second incident—when the companion repaired the wall of a town whose people had refused them hospitality—Musa spoke with humility and finality.

He said: *"If I ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as your companion."* This was not a threat or anger, but a sincere admission of his own shortcoming. He acknowledged that he had failed to fulfill the condition of patience, and he gave his companion full permission to leave him if he slipped again. Then he added: *"You have reached from me an excuse"*—meaning, *"You have a valid justification, on my part, to part ways with me. You have already warned me, and I have broken my word twice. So you are fully excused if you choose to leave me now or after any further mistake."*

This statement reflects the noble character of Musa—he did not blame his teacher, nor did he try to justify his own impatience. Instead, he took full responsibility and acknowledged the other's right to end the journey. It also shows the beauty of Islamic manners: even in disagreement, one should speak with respect, admit faults, and honor the conditions set by others.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us profound lessons in humility, self-awareness, and the etiquette of learning. Musa, despite being a great prophet, did not feel ashamed to admit his limitation. He understood that knowledge has levels, and some wisdom can only be grasped by those who are patient and trusting. As believers, we should learn to accept our mistakes gracefully, apologize sincerely, and respect the boundaries set by our teachers and mentors. True growth comes not from defending our errors, but from recognizing them and striving to improve. Moreover, this story reminds us that Allah's wisdom is vast—sometimes we question things we do not understand, but if we remain patient and trust in Allah's plan, we will eventually see the beauty behind every trial. Let us train our hearts to say, as Musa did, *"You have reached from me an excuse"*—not out of defeat, but out of maturity and submission to the greater wisdom of Allah.

So they set out, until when they met a boy, al-Khidh r killed him. [Moses] said, "Have you killed a pure soul for other than [having killed] a soul? You have certainly done a deplorable thing."
[Al-Khidh r] said, "Did I not tell you that with me you would never be able to have patience?"
[Moses] said, "If I should ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have obtained from me an excuse."
So they set out, until when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. And they found therein a wall about to collapse, so al-Khidh r restored it. [Moses] said, "If you wished, you could have taken for it a payment."
[Al-Khidh r] said, "This is parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience.
