Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Alam aqul laka" — "Did I not tell you?" — a gentle reminder and admonition.
- "Lan tastati'a ma'iya sabra" — "You will never be able to have patience with me" — meaning you cannot bear or endure what you witness of my actions.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Here, Al-Khidr (peace be upon him) addresses Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) with a tone of gentle reproach and reminder. He says: "Did I not tell you beforehand that you would not be able to bear patiently with what I do?" This statement comes after Musa had already broken his promise of patience for the second time — this time after Al-Khidr had repaired a wall in a town whose people had refused them hospitality.
In the first instance, when Musa objected to the scuttling of the boat, he was excused because it was his first lapse. But now, after being explicitly reminded and having given his word to remain patient, his second objection warranted a firmer admonition. Notice the addition of the word "laka" (to you) in this second statement, which was not present in the first warning — this subtle emphasis serves as a stronger rebuke, highlighting that Musa had been clearly forewarned and yet found it difficult to restrain himself.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: when we commit to a path of patience and trust in Allah's wisdom — especially in matters we do not fully understand — we must strive to honor that commitment. Human nature is quick to judge what it cannot comprehend, but the believer is called to a higher standard: to submit to Allah's decree and to the wisdom of those whom Allah has granted knowledge, even when the outward appearance of events seems puzzling or even wrong to our limited perception.
The story of Musa and Al-Khidr teaches us humility — that there is knowledge beyond our own, and wisdom hidden beneath the surface of events. It invites us to cultivate patience, to restrain our haste, and to trust that Allah's plan, though sometimes mysterious, is always perfect. How beautiful is this Quranic guidance that trains our souls to pause before objecting, to reflect before reacting, and to remember that what we see is not always the whole truth!
