Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Makkanna" (مَكَّنَّا): We established, empowered, and gave firm authority.
- "Sabadan" (سَبَبًا): A means, way, or pathway — the tools and methods by which one achieves a goal.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah speaks of Dhul-Qarnayn, a righteous and powerful ruler whom Allah granted immense authority and capability. The verse declares: "Indeed, We established him firmly in the land, and We gave him from everything a means."
This means that Allah granted Dhul-Qarnayn sovereignty and dominion over vast territories, enabling him to travel, conquer, and govern with strength and justice. Moreover, Allah endowed him with the knowledge and resources to access the "means" of all things — that is, the practical methods, strategies, and tools needed to accomplish whatever he set out to do, whether opening cities, overcoming enemies, or building great structures. This was not by his own power alone, but a divine gift and favor from Allah, who chose him for this mission.
The verse highlights that true power and success come from Allah alone. Dhul-Qarnayn was not merely a mighty king; he was a servant of Allah who used his God-given abilities for righteous purposes, as the following verses will show. His story teaches us that when Allah grants a person authority, wealth, or knowledge, it is a test — and the best use of such blessings is to serve justice, help others, and remain humble before the Creator.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a beautiful reminder that Allah is the One who grants power, capability, and the means to succeed. No matter how strong or capable a person may be, all abilities ultimately come from Allah. As believers, we should recognize that every skill, opportunity, and resource we possess is a trust from Him. Let us strive to use our own "means" — our time, talents, and resources — in ways that please Allah, just as Dhul-Qarnayn did. When we align our efforts with faith and righteousness, Allah opens doors for us that we never imagined, and He blesses our endeavors with success in this world and the Hereafter. So, turn to Allah with sincerity, ask Him for the means to do good, and trust that He will guide your steps.
