Word Meanings:
- Nabadha (نَبَذَ): To cast away, throw aside, or discard with disregard.
- Wara'a dhuhoorihim (وَرَاءَ ظُهُورِهِمْ): Literally "behind their backs" — an idiom meaning to abandon, ignore, or treat with utter neglect.
- Fareeq (فَرِيقٌ): A group or party among them.
- Alladheena ootoo al-kitab (الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ): Those who were given the Scripture — referring to the Jews (and by extension, the People of the Book).
Explanation of the Verse:
When Allah sent His final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), with the Qur'an — a Book that confirmed the truth that was still preserved in the Torah, including the prophecies and descriptions of this coming Messenger — a group among the People of the Book did not merely reject him. They went further: they took the Book of Allah (the Torah) and cast it behind their backs, as if it were a worthless thing. They abandoned its teachings, ignored its clear signs pointing to the truth of Muhammad's message, and refused to act upon what they knew to be true.
Their behaviour was not born of ignorance, for they were scholars and custodians of the Scripture. Rather, it was born of arrogance, envy, and worldly desires. They knew the truth in their hearts, yet they turned away from it deliberately. The Qur'an describes their state as being like those who know nothing at all — because what good is knowledge if it does not guide one to the truth? What benefit is a Book if it is not followed? They read the Torah, yet they did not live by it. They recognised the Messenger's description, yet they denied him. Thus, they became like the ignorant, for true ignorance is not the absence of knowledge, but the failure to act upon it.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer and every seeker of truth. It warns us against the danger of possessing knowledge without acting upon it. How many of us read the Qur'an daily, yet our lives remain unchanged? How many of us know the commands of Allah, yet we neglect them? The People of the Book were not condemned merely for rejecting the Messenger — they were condemned for discarding the very Book they claimed to believe in. They let go of the rope of Allah and lost both worlds.
Dear reader, do not let your knowledge become a burden against you. Let the Qur'an be your guide, your light, and your companion. When the truth reaches you — whether through a verse, a sermon, or a sincere advisor — hold fast to it, no matter the cost. For the one who clings to the Book of Allah and follows His Messenger will never be led astray. And the one who turns away, even while knowing the truth, will find that the very knowledge they possessed will bear witness against them on the Day of Judgement.
Let us not be like those who threw the Book behind their backs. Instead, let us carry it in our hearts, act upon it in our lives, and invite others to its light. For in it is our success in this life and the next.
