Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • ʿAhd (عهد): A covenant, pact, or binding promise—whether between people and God or among people themselves.
  • Nabadha (نبذ): To cast away, discard, or break—here, it means to reject and violate a commitment.
  • Fareeq (فريق): A group or party—referring to a faction among the people addressed.
  • Lā yuʾminūn (لا يؤمنون): They do not truly believe—indicating a lack of genuine faith that would compel them to honor their promises.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse exposes a painful reality about the Children of Israel during the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It points to their disgraceful habit of breaking every covenant they made. Whenever they entered into an agreement—whether with God, with His prophets, or with the believers—a faction among them would immediately discard it, as if it were a worthless object thrown aside. The verse expresses astonishment at their behavior: "Is it not shocking that every time they make a promise, some group among them breaks it?" This was not a rare occurrence; it was their consistent pattern.

The most significant of these covenants was their pledge, recorded in their own scriptures, to believe in the final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), when he would appear. They swore that if he came, they would follow him. Yet, when he did come with the truth, they rejected him and broke their word. The verse concludes with a harsh but truthful assessment: "Most of them do not believe." This means their disbelief was not merely in Muhammad (peace be upon him) but extended to their own revealed book, the Torah, because true belief in the Torah necessarily entails accepting what it foretold about the coming of the final Prophet. Their rejection of him proved that their faith was hollow and superficial.

Reflection and Call to Faith:

This verse serves as a powerful reminder for all of us about the sanctity of promises and the essence of true faith. A believer is someone whose word is their bond—who honors commitments even when it is difficult. The Quran teaches us that faith is not a mere claim; it is a reality that transforms a person’s character, making them trustworthy, upright, and sincere.

How beautiful is the way of Islam, which elevates honesty and integrity to the level of worship! When you keep your promises, you are not just being ethical—you are drawing closer to Allah, who Himself is Al-Wafī (the Most Faithful to His covenant). Let this verse inspire you to be among those who fulfill their promises, whether to God or to people. And if you have not yet embraced the truth of Islam, let this be your moment to reflect: the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came with clear signs, just as the earlier scriptures foretold. Do not be like those who had the truth within their reach and turned away. Open your heart, honor the covenant of your Creator, and taste the peace that comes from sincere faith.

📜 Verse 98-102 — Al-Baqarah

Whoever is an enemy to Allah and His angels and His messengers and Gabriel and Michael - then indeed, Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers.
And We have certainly revealed to you verses [which are] clear proofs, and no one would deny them except the defiantly disobedient.
Is it not [true] that every time they took a covenant a party of them threw it away? But, [in fact], most of them do not believe.
And when a messenger from Allah came to them confirming that which was with them, a party of those who had been given the Scripture threw the Scripture of Allah behind their backs as if they did not know [what it contained].
And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, "We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]." And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.
