Word Meanings:

(Yawaddu): To love, desire, or wish for something.
(Ahl al-Kitab): The People of the Book — the Jews and Christians who received earlier scriptures.
(Al-Mushrikeen): The polytheists — those who associate partners with Allah, specifically the Arab idol-worshippers at the time of revelation.
(Khayr): Goodness — encompassing revelation, knowledge, guidance, victory, and every blessing.
(Yakhtassu): To single out or exclusively bestow upon someone.
(Rahmatihi): His mercy — here referring specifically to prophethood, divine revelation, and faith.
(Al-Fadl al-‘Azheem): The immense bounty and grace — Allah’s abundant, unearned generosity.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse exposes the deep-seated malice and envy hidden in the hearts of those who reject the truth. Whether they were from the People of the Book — the Jews and Christians of that era — or the polytheists of Arabia, they all shared one bitter sentiment: they absolutely did not wish for any good to descend upon you, O believers. They did not want the Quran to be revealed to you, nor knowledge, nor victory, nor any form of divine blessing from your Lord. Their hearts burned with resentment at the very thought that Allah would choose you to carry His final message and grant you honor and guidance.

The context of this revelation is significant. When the Muslims would call their allies among the Jews to believe in Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), some of them would respond dismissively, saying, "What you are calling us to is not better than what we are upon," while secretly wishing it were not true. Allah exposed their hypocrisy and their inner malice, making clear that their denial was not based on genuine conviction but on envy and stubborn pride.

Then Allah addresses this with a profound truth: "And Allah singles out for His mercy whom He wills." This means that prophethood, revelation, and true faith are not commodities that anyone can seize or distribute. They are purely the choice of Allah, the All-Wise, who places His message exactly where He knows it belongs. No amount of wishing, scheming, or opposition from the disbelievers can alter His decree. If Allah has chosen the believers to receive this mercy, then no enemy can prevent it, and if He withholds it from others, no one can force it upon them.

The verse concludes with a powerful reminder: "And Allah is the Possessor of immense bounty." His generosity is vast beyond measure, and His grace is not earned by anyone's merit alone but flows from His infinite kindness. He gives to whom He wills without anyone being able to question His wisdom. This is a source of great comfort for the believers — that their faith, their Prophet, and their Book are all gifts from Allah's boundless favor, not achievements of their own making. And it is a warning to the disbelievers that their opposition is futile, for Allah's bounty cannot be blocked by human hostility.

A Da‘wah Reflection for the Reader:

Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this verse. It teaches us that the greatest blessings in life — guidance, faith, and closeness to Allah — are not things that anyone can take from you, nor can anyone prevent them from reaching you. When Allah chooses to honor a person with His mercy, no force on earth can stand in the way. So hold firmly to your faith with confidence and pride, knowing that you carry a treasure that the envious cannot diminish.

At the same time, let this verse soften your heart toward those who have not yet received this guidance. Their hostility often stems from envy and fear of losing their status, not from genuine truth-seeking. Be patient with them, show them the beauty of Islam through your character, and trust that Allah’s wisdom in guiding hearts is perfect. The same Allah who chose you for His mercy is capable of guiding them too — so never lose hope in His immense bounty, and never stop praying for others to taste the sweetness of faith that you have been blessed with.

📜 Verse 103-107 — Al-Baqarah

And if they had believed and feared Allah, then the reward from Allah would have been [far] better, if they only knew.
O you who have believed, say not [to Allah 's Messenger], "Ra'ina" but say, "Unthurna" and listen. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.
Neither those who disbelieve from the People of the Scripture nor the polytheists wish that any good should be sent down to you from your Lord. But Allah selects for His mercy whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.
We do not abrogate a verse or cause it to be forgotten except that We bring forth [one] better than it or similar to it. Do you not know that Allah is over all things competent?
Do you not know that to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and [that] you have not besides Allah any protector or any helper?
