Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Millatahum (مِلَّتَهُمْ): Their religion, creed, or way of life.
- Ahwa'ahum (أَهْوَاءَهُم): Their desires and whims—referring to their corrupt inclinations and false preferences.
- Huda Allah (هُدَى اللَّهِ): The guidance of Allah—i.e., Islam and the revelation He sent down.
- Waliyy (وَلِيٍّ): A protector, ally, or one who takes charge of your affairs.
- Naseer (نَصِيرٍ): A helper or supporter who comes to your aid.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O beloved Prophet, know this truth clearly: the Jews and the Christians will never be truly pleased with you—no matter how much you try to accommodate them, no matter how many concessions you offer—until you completely abandon your religion and follow their creed. Their dissatisfaction is not about your character or your message's merits; it is fundamentally about your refusal to adopt their faith. They will not settle for peace or coexistence as long as you remain upon the truth of Islam.
So Allah instructs you to declare to them with confidence and clarity: "Indeed, the guidance of Allah—the religion of Islam, the Qur'an, and the straight path He has revealed—that alone is the true guidance." Not what they follow, for their religions have been altered and corrupted. The truth is not determined by their approval or disapproval; it is determined by what Allah has sent down.
Then comes a severe and powerful warning—addressed to the Prophet ﷺ in form, but intended for the entire Muslim nation until the end of time: If you were to follow their desires and whims after the clear knowledge and definitive proof that has come to you—after you know with certainty that Islam is the truth and their religions are false—then you would find no protector from Allah to defend you, and no helper to support you against His punishment. You would be left utterly alone, stripped of divine care and assistance.
This verse carries a profound lesson: the pursuit of people's approval should never come at the expense of Allah's pleasure. The enemies of truth will never be satisfied with you unless you become like them. So hold firm to your religion, be proud of your faith, and do not compromise your principles for the sake of winning the favor of those who will never be pleased with you anyway. Your ultimate success lies not in their acceptance, but in Allah's guidance and support. And know that Allah's help is with those who remain steadfast upon the truth, even if the whole world stands against them.
