Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Muslimayni (مُسْلِمَيْنِ): Two who are completely submitted and obedient to Allah.
  • Ummah (أُمَّةً): A community or nation.
  • Manāsikana (مَنَاسِكَنَا): Our rites and rituals of worship, particularly the rituals of Hajj (pilgrimage).
  • Tub ʿalaynā (تُبْ عَلَيْنَا): Turn to us with mercy and accept our repentance.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this heartfelt supplication, Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Prophet Ismaʿil (Ishmael) — peace be upon them both — continue their beautiful prayer while raising the foundations of the Sacred House (the Kaʿbah). They call upon their Lord with profound humility and foresight:

"Our Lord, and make us Muslims [in submission] to You..." — They ask Allah to keep them firmly upon the path of complete submission, obedience, and sincerity to Him alone. Though they were already believers, they sought steadfastness and continuity, recognizing that the heart can never be secure without Allah's constant support. This submission encompasses all aspects of faith and righteous deeds.

"...and from our descendants a Muslim nation [submitted] to You." — They did not only pray for themselves; their love and concern extended to their progeny. They asked Allah to raise from their offspring a community that would also submit to Him, worship Him alone, and follow His guidance. The word "from" indicates a portion, as Allah had already revealed to them that some of their descendants would be unjust to themselves — yet they still hoped for a righteous core among them.

"...and show us our rites [of worship]." — They asked Allah to teach them the precise ways of worshipping Him, especially the rituals of Hajj and the sacred rites connected to the House of Allah. This teaches us that worship is not based on personal invention; rather, it must follow what Allah has prescribed and revealed.

"...and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful." — They concluded with a plea for forgiveness, acknowledging their human shortcomings and limitations in perfectly fulfilling Allah's rights upon them. They affirmed Allah's beautiful attributes: He is At-Tawwāb (the One who repeatedly accepts repentance and turns His servants' sins into good deeds) and Ar-Raḥīm (the Most Merciful, whose mercy encompasses all creation).

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse is a treasure of guidance for every believer. It teaches us that the greatest prophets themselves sought Allah's help to remain steadfast — so how much more do we need to constantly renew our faith and ask Allah for firmness? It also reminds us of the importance of praying for our children and future generations, that they may be a community submitted to Allah, carrying the torch of faith after us.

When you perform any act of worship, remember that the essence of Islam is *submission* — surrendering your will to Allah with love, hope, and humility. And when you fall short, never despair of Allah's mercy. He is always ready to accept your repentance, for His mercy truly knows no bounds. Let this duʿā be your daily companion, and let it inspire you to be a living example of submission to Allah, just as Ibrahim and Ismaʿil were.

📜 Verse 126-130 — Al-Baqarah

And [mention] when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this a secure city and provide its people with fruits - whoever of them believes in Allah and the Last Day." [Allah] said. "And whoever disbelieves - I will grant him enjoyment for a little; then I will force him to the punishment of the Fire, and wretched is the destination."
And [mention] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ishmael, [saying], "Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing.
Our Lord, and make us Muslims [in submission] to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation [in submission] to You. And show us our rites and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.
Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them. Indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise."
And who would be averse to the religion of Abraham except one who makes a fool of himself. And We had chosen him in this world, and indeed he, in the Hereafter, will be among the righteous.
