Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Ḥalālan (حَلَالًا): That which is permissible and lawful according to the divine legislation; it is not subject to punishment for consuming it.
- Ṭayyiban (طَيِّبًا): Pure, wholesome, and good — free from filth, harm, and any form of contamination or doubt. It is beneficial to the body and soul.
- Khuṭuwāt al-Shayṭān (خُطُوَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِ): The footsteps, paths, and deceptive ways of Satan — his whispers, schemes, and gradual enticements toward sin, innovation in religion, and the unlawful alteration of divine rulings.
- ʿAdūwun mubīn (عَدُوٌّ مُّبِينٌ): A clear, manifest, and open enemy whose enmity is evident and undeniable.
The Tafsīr (Explanation):
O mankind! Allah, in His infinite mercy and boundless generosity, addresses all of humanity — believers and non-believers alike — inviting them to enjoy the vast provisions He has spread across the earth. He says: *"Eat from what is on the earth, lawful and pure."* This is not a mere permission but a gracious invitation from the Creator to His creation, reminding them that the earth is a treasure trove of sustenance, yet not everything in it is meant for consumption. The word "from" indicates a portion — for there are things on earth that are harmful, poisonous, or forbidden. Thus, Allah directs you to choose only that which is ḥalāl — lawful in its acquisition and essence — and ṭayyib — pure, wholesome, and free from all that is filthy, harmful, or acquired through unlawful means.
Then comes a profound warning: *"And do not follow the footsteps of Satan."* Satan, the accursed one, does not always call you to outright disbelief or major sins at once. Rather, he takes you step by step — a small compromise here, a tiny indulgence there — until you find yourself far from the straight path. He whispers to you to doubt what is lawful, to overcomplicate what is simple, to forbid what Allah has permitted, or to permit what Allah has forbidden. He beautifies extravagance, wastefulness, and the consumption of that which is impure or ill-gotten. He makes you forget that the ultimate purpose of eating is to strengthen your body for worship and obedience.
Allah then reminds you of the reason for this warning: *"Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy."* Satan's enmity is not hidden or ambiguous — it is open and manifest. From the very beginning, when he refused to prostrate to Adam, he swore: *"I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path"* (Al-Aʿrāf 7:16). His sole mission is to misguide you, to drag you into ruin, and to make you disobey your Most Merciful Lord. Would any sane person follow the footsteps of an enemy who seeks nothing but their destruction?
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this divine command. Your Lord does not forbid you from enjoying the good things of this world — rather, He invites you to enjoy them within the boundaries He has set, so that your pleasure is coupled with purity and your sustenance is a means of gratitude. Islam is not a religion of deprivation; it is a religion of balance, where the lawful is abundant and the unlawful is limited for your own protection.
So, when you eat, remember: let your food be earned lawfully, let it be pure and wholesome, and let your heart be filled with gratitude to the One who provided it. And beware of Satan's whispers — he may not ask you to commit a major sin today, but he will slowly lead you there tomorrow. Guard your heart, purify your intake, and you will find sweetness in your worship and light in your life. For the one who eats what is lawful and pure, Allah answers his supplications and accepts his deeds.
O Allah, grant us lawful and pure sustenance, protect us from the footsteps of Satan, and make us among those who are grateful and obedient. Āmīn.
