Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • As-Sū’ (السوء): That which is evil, harmful, or causes distress; sin and wrongdoing that brings sorrow to the one who commits it.
  • Al-Fahshā’ (الفحشاء): Immorality and lewdness; the most heinous and repugnant sins, those that are extremely disgraceful and shameful.
  • An Taqūlū ‘alā Allāh mā lā ta‘lamūn (أن تقولوا على الله ما لا تعلمون): To speak about Allah without knowledge—falsely attributing to Him statements, rulings, or laws that have no basis in revelation or sound knowledge.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah exposes the true nature of Satan’s commands and warns believers against following his whispers. After the previous verse clarified that Satan is an open enemy who calls his followers to be among the dwellers of the Blazing Fire, this verse elaborates on what exactly Satan commands. His orders are not neutral or harmless—they are exclusively directed toward three things:

First, he commands evil (as-sū’) — every sin that brings harm to the soul, tarnishes one’s character, and leads to regret and sorrow. This includes all acts of disobedience, whether small or great, that distance a person from Allah and from inner peace.

Second, he commands immorality (al-fahshā’) — the most severe and abominable sins, such as adultery, fornication, theft, slander, and every act that society’s sound nature and divine law consider repulsive. These are the sins that corrupt both the individual and the community, stripping away dignity and honor.

Third, and most dangerously, he commands people to say about Allah what they do not know — to fabricate lies against Allah by inventing religious rulings, declaring things lawful or unlawful without evidence, spreading false beliefs, and attributing to Allah words He never revealed. This is the gravest of the three, for it corrupts the very foundation of faith and misleads entire nations. The pagans of Arabia, for example, declared certain cattle and crops forbidden by their own whims, claiming this was Allah’s law—yet they had no knowledge or revelation to support such claims.

Thus, the verse serves as a clear warning: any command that leads to sin, indecency, or speaking about Allah without knowledge is from Satan, not from Allah. The believer must be vigilant, discerning, and anchored in authentic knowledge from the Qur’an and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace be upon him).

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, this verse is a divine compass that protects you from the traps of the accursed enemy. Satan does not approach you with obvious evil alone—he beautifies it, dresses it in attractive garments, and whispers to you to justify it. He even goes further, prompting you to speak about Allah without knowledge, so that you may fall into misguidance while believing you are upon truth.

So hold firmly to knowledge. Learn your religion from its authentic sources—the Book of Allah and the authentic Sunnah of His Prophet (peace be upon him). Do not let anyone dictate to you what is lawful or unlawful without clear evidence. And when you feel the urge to sin, remember that this urge is from your enemy, who seeks your destruction. Resist him, seek refuge in Allah, and you will find sweetness in obedience, peace in your heart, and honor in this life and the Hereafter.

Indeed, Allah, in His infinite mercy, has not left you without guidance. He has sent you a Messenger, revealed a Book, and clarified the path. Whoever follows it will never be led astray, and whoever abandons it for the whispers of Satan will only find loss. Choose wisely, for your soul is precious, and your destination is eternal.

📜 Verse 167-171 — Al-Baqarah

Those who followed will say, "If only we had another turn [at worldly life] so we could disassociate ourselves from them as they have disassociated themselves from us." Thus will Allah show them their deeds as regrets upon them. And they are never to emerge from the Fire.
O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.
He only orders you to evil and immorality and to say about Allah what you do not know.
And when it is said to them, "Follow what Allah has revealed," they say, "Rather, we will follow that which we found our fathers doing." Even though their fathers understood nothing, nor were they guided?
The example of those who disbelieve is like that of one who shouts at what hears nothing but calls and cries cattle or sheep - deaf, dumb and blind, so they do not understand.
