Tafsir (Explanation):
When you have completed your sacred rites of Hajj and fulfilled the rituals Allah has prescribed for you, then turn your hearts and tongues to the remembrance of Allah — glorify Him, praise Him, and magnify Him abundantly. Remember Him with the same intensity and enthusiasm with which you used to boast about your forefathers' noble qualities and achievements, or even more intensely. For indeed, every blessing you enjoy — your health, your wealth, your safety, and your very ability to perform these rites — comes from Him alone. He is more deserving of your praise and gratitude than any ancestor ever could be.
The Arabs of the pre-Islamic era would gather after Hajj and proudly recount their fathers' heroic deeds, noble lineage, and generous acts. Allah directs the believers to redirect this energy toward His remembrance — declaring His greatness (Takbir), praising His bounty, and thanking Him for His countless favours. Your remembrance of Allah should not merely equal your remembrance of your fathers; it should surpass it in intensity, frequency, and sincerity.
Then Allah draws attention to the differing intentions and goals among people. Among mankind are those whose entire focus and aspiration is confined to this worldly life. They call upon their Lord saying: "Our Lord, give us in this world" — asking for health, wealth, children, livestock, and material comforts. They do not ask for what benefits them in the Hereafter, nor do they seek Allah's pleasure or the eternal bliss of Paradise. Such people have no share in the Hereafter — no portion of good, no reward, and no place in Paradise — because they turned away from it and preferred the fleeting pleasures of this world over the everlasting life to come.
This verse gently reminds every believer to examine their own supplications and priorities. Are we among those who only ask for worldly matters, or do we balance our requests — seeking both the good of this world and the excellence of the Hereafter? The believer's heart should yearn for both, but with the Hereafter taking precedence, for it is the eternal abode where true success lies.
Let this beautiful guidance inspire you, dear reader, to make the remembrance of Allah the constant companion of your heart — in times of ease and hardship, during Hajj and throughout your daily life. For the one who remembers Allah abundantly finds peace in his heart, purpose in his life, and success in both worlds. And when you supplicate, follow the example of the righteous servants of Allah who beautifully combined both aspirations: "Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire."
