Word Meanings:
- Ātinā (آتِنَا): Give us, grant us.
- Ḥasanah (حَسَنَةً): Goodness, excellence, well-being — encompassing all that is good and beneficial.
- Qinā (قِنَا): Protect us, spare us, save us.
Explanation of the Verse:
Among the people — and specifically among the believers — there are those who have reached a profound level of faith and wisdom. They do not limit their supplication to the fleeting pleasures of this world, nor do they neglect the eternal life to come. Rather, they raise their hands to their Lord and say: *"Our Lord, give us in this world that which is good, and in the Hereafter that which is good, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."*
This beautiful and comprehensive supplication seeks goodness in this world — which includes sound health, lawful provision, beneficial knowledge, righteous deeds, a loving spouse, righteous children, and every matter that brings comfort and tranquility in one's worldly life. It also seeks goodness in the Hereafter — which is the ultimate success: Paradise, the pleasure of Allah, and being saved from all that brings grief on that Day. And finally, it seeks protection from the punishment of the Fire — which means being spared from Hell and from every deed, word, or belief that could lead a person to it.
This verse teaches us that the believer is balanced — neither obsessed with worldly gains at the expense of the Hereafter, nor neglecting legitimate worldly needs while claiming spiritual purity. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself used to make this supplication frequently, and it is reported in the authentic collections of Bukhari and Muslim that this was among his most repeated prayers. This shows us its immense value and virtue.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, this verse is a treasure of guidance for your daily life. When you supplicate with these words, you are asking your Lord for *everything* — the good of both worlds and safety from the worst of punishments. It is a prayer that combines all your needs in just a few words. So make it your constant companion, especially in your sujood, after prayers, and in the last third of the night. Let it be a reflection of your heart's true desire: a life of goodness here, a life of bliss forever, and a shield against the Fire. And know that the One who hears this supplication is the Most Generous, the Most Merciful — He never turns away a sincere servant who calls upon Him. So call upon Him with certainty, and He will answer.
