Tafsir (Explanation):
Among the countless favors Allah bestowed upon the Children of Israel during their wandering in the wilderness was His divine protection and provision. When they were lost in the desert, exposed to the scorching heat of the sun with no shelter, Allah, out of His infinite mercy, caused clouds to spread over them like a canopy, shielding them from the burning rays. This was not merely physical comfort—it was a visible sign of Allah’s care and guardianship over His servants.
Furthermore, Allah provided them with sustenance from His boundless treasures: Al-Mann, a sweet substance resembling honey that would fall from the sky, and Al-Salwa, tender quail meat that satisfied their hunger. They were told: *"Eat of the good and pure things We have provided for you."* This was an invitation to enjoy the blessings of Allah with gratitude and obedience, without transgression or ingratitude.
Yet, despite these magnificent favors, they rebelled and showed ingratitude. They did not harm Allah in any way—for Allah is Self-Sufficient and free of all needs. Their disobedience did not diminish His kingdom, nor did their gratitude increase it. Rather, the harm of their ingratitude and rebellion fell entirely upon themselves. By rejecting the blessings and disobeying His commands, they deprived their own souls of reward and exposed themselves to punishment.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: Allah’s blessings are a test. When we receive His favors, we must respond with gratitude, humility, and obedience. Ingratitude does not hurt Allah—it only hurts us. It closes the doors of His mercy and opens the path to loss. So let us reflect on the countless blessings around us—our health, our food, our safety, and above all, the gift of faith—and use them in ways that please our Lord. For whoever is grateful, Allah increases him, and whoever is ungrateful, the loss is his alone.
