Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah addresses the Children of Israel, reminding them of His abundant favors and their shameful response to His messengers. Allah declares that He gave Musa (Moses), peace be upon him, the Torah—a comprehensive divine guidance—and then sent a succession of prophets after him, one following another, to guide the people continuously. This was a great mercy, as Allah never left them without guidance.
Then Allah mentions His special favor upon Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus, son of Mary), peace be upon him, to whom He granted clear miracles and undeniable proofs of his prophethood—such as healing the blind and the leper, and bringing the dead to life by Allah's permission. Moreover, Allah strengthened him with the Holy Spirit, Jibril (Gabriel), who supported him and protected him.
After recounting these blessings, Allah poses a powerful, reproachful question to the Children of Israel: "Is it that every time a messenger came to you with what your souls did not desire, you became arrogant?" This question exposes their stubbornness and rebellion. Whenever a prophet brought a message that contradicted their whims and desires—calling them to worship Allah alone, to follow the truth, and to abandon their worldly greed and corruption—they responded with pride and rejection. Their arrogance led them to deny some messengers entirely, accusing them of falsehood, and to kill others, such as Zakariyya and Yahya (Zechariah and John), peace be upon them.
This verse serves as a profound lesson for all humanity: the true obstacle to faith is not the absence of evidence, but the arrogance of the heart and the attachment to one's desires. When a person prefers their own whims over divine truth, they will inevitably reject guidance, no matter how clear it is.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this verse and let it awaken your heart. Allah sent messengers with clear proofs and supported them with miracles, yet the people's arrogance prevented them from benefiting. The question Allah poses is not only historical—it is a mirror for every generation. Today, the greatest miracle remains the Qur'an, a living, preserved book that challenges humanity to produce anything like it. Will you respond with humility and submission, or with arrogance and rejection? The choice is yours, and your eternal happiness depends on it. Embrace the truth with an open heart, for Allah's mercy is vast, and His guidance is available to all who sincerely seek it.
