Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ghulf (غُلْف): Covered or wrapped; hearts that are veiled and sealed, unable to receive or comprehend guidance.
- La'anahum (لَعَنَهُم): Allah removed them from His mercy and distanced them from all good.
- Fa qalilan ma yu'minun (فَقَلِيلًا مَّا يُؤْمِنُونَ): They do not believe except with a faith that is insignificant and of no benefit—or, according to another interpretation, only a very few of them truly believe.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (peace be upon him), called the Children of Israel to faith and truth, they responded with arrogance and false excuses, saying: "Our hearts are wrapped and covered," meaning, "They are enclosed in veils and shields, so your words cannot penetrate them, and we do not understand what you say." They claimed this as if it were an inherent defect that excused their rejection.
But Allah refutes their claim immediately: "Nay, Allah has cursed them for their disbelief." The reality is not that their hearts are naturally sealed by some unavoidable fate—rather, it is their own persistent disbelief and stubborn rejection of the truth that caused Allah to distance them from His mercy and seal their hearts as a just consequence of their crimes. Their claim of being unable to understand is a lie; they understood the truth perfectly well, but they chose to reject it out of envy and arrogance.
Then Allah states: "So little is what they believe." This means their faith is either extremely scarce—limited to a few of them, as only a handful of the Jews embraced Islam—or their belief is superficial and useless, such as believing in some portions of the Torah while denying others, or believing in Allah without following His messengers. In both cases, their faith brings them no benefit in this life or the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, see how the excuse of "closed hearts" was merely a shield for arrogance and pride. How often do we, too, make excuses for not following the truth? We say, "My heart is hard," or "I don't feel ready," or "I don't understand." But the heart that sincerely seeks Allah will find its way opened. Allah says: "So whoever Allah wants to guide—He expands his breast to [contain] Islam" (6:125). The door of guidance is open to every sincere seeker. Do not let your excuses become the chains that bind you to loss. Turn to Allah with a humble heart, and He will remove every veil, for He is the One who turns hearts and grants understanding. The Qur'an is not a book for a select few—it is a light for every soul that seeks it, and a healing for every heart that is sincere. Do not be like those who claimed their hearts were sealed while the truth stood before them; rather, be among those who say: "We hear and we obey," and find peace in the embrace of faith.
