Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • اقْذِفِيهِ (Iqdhifihi): Throw him or cast him.
  • التَّابُوتِ (At-Tabut): The wooden box or chest (the ark).
  • الْيَمِّ (Al-Yamm): The sea or large body of water — here, the Nile River.
  • بِالسَّاحِلِ (As-Sahil): The shore or riverbank.
  • وَأَلْقَيْتُ عَلَيْكَ مَحَبَّةً مِّنِّي (Wa alqaytu 'alayka mahabbatan minni): I cast upon you love from Me — meaning Allah made people naturally drawn to him.
  • وَلِتُصْنَعَ عَلَى عَيْنِي (Wa litusna'a 'ala 'ayni): So that you would be raised under My Eye — meaning under Allah's protection, care, and watchful guardianship.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse takes us back to the most delicate and dramatic moment in the life of Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be upon him — a moment when divine wisdom turned apparent tragedy into a magnificent plan of salvation.

Allah, the Exalted, inspired Musa's mother at a time of extreme danger. The tyrant Pharaoh was slaughtering newborn Israelite boys, fearing that a boy would rise to challenge his kingdom. So Allah guided her heart: *"Place him in a chest, then cast the chest into the river."* This was not a reckless act — it was an act of profound trust in Allah. The mother, with a heart trembling yet filled with faith, placed her infant son in a wooden box and let the Nile carry him away.

Then Allah decreed that the river would not drown the child, but would gently deliver him to the shore — right into the palace of Pharaoh himself. And here is the astonishing divine twist: the very enemy who sought to kill Musa would become the one to raise him. Allah called Pharaoh *"an enemy to Me and an enemy to him"* — an enemy of Allah and an enemy of Musa — yet Allah's will overrode all human schemes. The enemy took the child in, unknowingly fulfilling Allah's plan.

Then Allah said: *"And I cast upon you love from Me."* This is a beautiful divine gift. Allah placed a special charm and affection for Musa in the hearts of people — even in the heart of Pharaoh and his wife. When the baby was found, everyone was drawn to him. Pharaoh's wife, Asiyah, pleaded to keep him, saying: *"A comfort to the eye for me and for you — do not kill him."* This love was not earned by Musa; it was a pure gift from Allah, showing that Allah places affection for His righteous servants in the hearts of His creation.

And finally: *"So that you would be raised under My Eye."* This means Musa was raised under Allah's special protection, care, and supervision. Allah was watching over him at every moment — from the river to the palace, from infancy to prophethood. Nothing happened to him except by divine decree and under divine guardianship.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, look at how Allah turned a mother's fear into a source of peace. She was commanded to do something that seemed impossible — to throw her baby into a river — yet Allah promised to bring him back to her arms. And indeed, He did. This is the nature of Allah's care for His believers: when you trust Him completely, He opens doors you never imagined.

This verse also teaches us that Allah's plans are far greater than our fears. The same enemy who wanted to destroy Musa became the one who protected and raised him. Allah can soften the hardest hearts and turn enemies into instruments of His mercy. So never despair when you face difficulties — the One who controlled the Nile and the heart of Pharaoh is still in control of everything today.

And what a beautiful gift is the love Allah places in hearts! When you are sincere with Allah, He makes people love you — not by your own effort, but by His grace. So strive to be close to Allah, and He will place acceptance and affection for you in the hearts of His servants.

Finally, know that Allah is always watching over you, just as He watched over Musa. You are never alone. Your affairs are in the hands of the Most Merciful, who says to a thing, "Be," and it is. So place your trust in Him, and let your heart rest in His care.

When We inspired to your mother what We inspired,

[Saying], 'Cast him into the chest and cast it into the river, and the river will throw it onto the bank; there will take him an enemy to Me and an enemy to him.' And I bestowed upon you love from Me that you would be brought up under My eye.
[And We favored you] when your sister went and said, 'Shall I direct you to someone who will be responsible for him?' So We restored you to your mother that she might be content and not grieve. And you killed someone, but We saved you from retaliation and tried you with a [severe] trial. And you remained [some] years among the people of Madyan. Then you came [here] at the decreed time, O Moses.
41وَاصْطَنَعْتُكَ لِنَفْسِي
And I produced you for Myself.
