Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • أَوْحَيْنَا (awhayna): We inspired or revealed — here, it refers to divine inspiration placed into the heart of Musa's mother, not revelation to a prophet.
  • أُمِّكَ (ummi-k): Your mother — referring to the mother of Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be upon him.
  • مَا يُوحَىٰ (ma yuha): What is inspired — the specific guidance and command that Allah placed in her heart.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse takes us back to the very beginning of Prophet Musa's extraordinary story, reminding him of Allah's immense favor and precise planning. Allah says: "When We inspired your mother with that which is inspired." This was not a revelation given to a prophet, but a divine inspiration — a profound and certain guidance placed directly into the heart of a believing mother at a moment of extreme danger and distress.

At that time, Pharaoh was slaughtering newborn male sons of the Children of Israel out of fear that a boy would rise against his tyranny. Musa's mother was terrified for her infant son, yet Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, inspired her with a seemingly impossible plan: to place her baby in a chest and cast him into the river. This was an act that defied all human logic — how could a mother throw her child into the water? But it was Allah's command, and He assured her that He would protect him, return him to her, and make him one of His messengers.

This divine inspiration was the first link in a chain of miracles that would lead Musa to be raised in the very palace of Pharaoh, protected by the very enemy who sought to kill him. Allah's words here are a reminder that His plan transcends human understanding — what appears to be a loss is often the beginning of a great victory. The verse also highlights Allah's absolute power over all affairs: He inspires whom He wills, protects whom He wills, and fulfills His promises without fail.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: when Allah guides your heart toward a course of action that seems frightening or illogical, trust Him completely. The mother of Musa did not have a revealed scripture or a visible miracle — she had a heart filled with faith and a quiet inspiration from her Lord. And look at how Allah honored that trust! He turned her moment of fear into a story of triumph that echoes through eternity.

For us today, this teaches us that Allah speaks to His sincere servants through inspiration, through the quiet certainty that settles in the heart when we turn to Him in prayer and reliance. When you face a difficult decision, and you feel that inner conviction to do what is right even when it is hard — that is a form of divine guidance. Hold onto it, act upon it, and leave the results to Allah, for He is the Best of Planners. And remember: the same Allah who inspired a mother to cast her child into the river is the One who returned that child to her arms, stronger and destined for greatness. He is with you too, in every step of your journey.

📜 Verse 36-40 — Taha

[Allah] said, "You have been granted your request, O Moses.
And We had already conferred favor upon you another time,
When We inspired to your mother what We inspired,
[Saying], 'Cast him into the chest and cast it into the river, and the river will throw it onto the bank; there will take him an enemy to Me and an enemy to him.' And I bestowed upon you love from Me that you would be brought up under My eye.
[And We favored you] when your sister went and said, 'Shall I direct you to someone who will be responsible for him?' So We restored you to your mother that she might be content and not grieve. And you killed someone, but We saved you from retaliation and tried you with a [severe] trial. And you remained [some] years among the people of Madyan. Then you came [here] at the decreed time, O Moses.
