Word Meanings:

  • Fatanā (فَتَنَّا): We tested, tried, or afflicted with a trial.
  • Min baʿdika (مِن بَعْدِكَ): After your departure (from among them).
  • Aḍallahum (أَضَلَّهُم): Led them astray, caused them to go astray.
  • As-Sāmirī (السَّامِرِيُّ): The Samiri — a man from among the Children of Israel who was a hypocrite and who crafted the golden calf.

Explanation of the Verse:

Here, Allah — Glorified and Exalted — informs His Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) of what transpired among his people after he left them to go to the appointed meeting with his Lord on Mount Tur. Allah says: "We have already tested your people after you departed from them." This was a trial and a tribulation — a test of their faith and steadfastness. And the one who led them into this deviation was the Samiri, a man who had hidden hypocrisy in his heart while outwardly claiming faith. He crafted for them a golden calf from their ornaments and made it emit a sound like the lowing of a cow, then called them to worship it, and they responded to his call, falling into misguidance.

Thus, the trial was twofold: the absence of their prophet Musa left a vacuum, and the cunning of the Samiri exploited that vacuum. The people, despite having witnessed the mighty signs of Allah — the parting of the sea, the destruction of Pharaoh, the manna and quails from heaven — still succumbed to this deviation. This shows the weakness of human nature when not anchored in firm knowledge and sincere faith.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

O beloved reader, ponder deeply upon this scene. Here is a people who had just witnessed the most tremendous miracles — yet when their prophet was absent for a short while, they turned to the worship of a calf made of gold, a lifeless statue that could neither hear, nor see, nor benefit them in any way. How swift is the heart to forget, and how easily does Shaytan exploit moments of weakness!

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: Faith is not a momentary emotion; it is a steadfast commitment that must be nurtured constantly. The absence of guidance — whether through the absence of scholars, the neglect of the Qur'an, or the abandonment of prayer — opens the door for the Samiris of every age to lead people astray with glittering falsehoods dressed in attractive forms.

So hold fast to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace be upon him). Do not let the absence of a leader or the allure of worldly temptations cause your heart to drift. And beware of those who, like the Samiri, appear to be from among the people of faith but secretly sow seeds of deviation. Test every claim against the Qur'an and the authentic teachings of Islam, for therein lies your safety.

And know that Allah, in His perfect wisdom, tests His servants — sometimes through hardship, and sometimes through ease and temptation — to distinguish the truthful from the false, and to raise the ranks of the patient and the steadfast. So be among those who remain firm upon the truth, and Allah will never abandon you.

📜 Verse 83-87 — Taha

[Allah] said, "And what made you hasten from your people, O Moses?"
He said, "They are close upon my tracks, and I hastened to You, my Lord, that You be pleased."
[Allah] said, "But indeed, We have tried your people after you [departed], and the Samiri has led them astray."
So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved. He said, "O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise? Then, was the time [of its fulfillment] too long for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord descend upon you, so you broke your promise [of obedience] to me?"
They said, "We did not break our promise to you by our will, but we were made to carry burdens from the ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh], so we threw them [into the fire], and thus did the Samiri throw."
