Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Futintum bihi" — You have been tested and tried by it (the calf); a trial to distinguish the believer from the disbeliever.
  • "Ar-Rahman" — The Most Merciful, the One whose mercy encompasses all creation, and who alone deserves worship.
  • "Ittabi'uni" — Follow me in what I call you to, namely the worship of Allah alone.
  • "Ati'u amri" — Obey my command, which is to abandon the worship of the calf and return to the worship of Allah.

Explanation of the Verse:

Before Prophet Musa (Moses) returned to his people, his brother Prophet Harun (Aaron) had already warned them. He said: "O my people, you have only been tested by this calf. This is a trial from Allah to reveal who among you remains steadfast in faith and who falls into disbelief. Your Lord is not this calf — your Lord is Ar-Rahman, the Most Merciful, who has no partner and who alone grants mercy and benefit. So follow me in worshipping Him alone, and obey my command to abandon this false object of worship."

Harun's words were clear, sincere, and full of compassion. He did not merely rebuke them; he reminded them of their Lord's mercy and called them back to the straight path. Yet, despite his clarity, most of them persisted in their error until Musa returned and confronted them.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us a profound lesson about the role of sincere advisors and the nature of trials. Harun stood firm in the truth even when the masses went astray. He did not compromise his message, nor did he remain silent in the face of falsehood. As Muslims, we are reminded that calling to Allah requires patience, clarity, and mercy — just as Harun addressed his people with gentleness ("O my people") while being uncompromising in the truth.

Moreover, the verse warns us that trials come in many forms. The calf was made of gold and made a sound — it was attractive and deceptive. Similarly, the distractions of this world — wealth, status, desires — can become "calves" that we worship instead of Allah. The test is whether we recognize them as tests and turn back to our true Lord, Ar-Rahman, whose mercy is far greater than any fleeting pleasure.

Let this verse inspire you to be like Harun: a voice of truth in your community, calling others with wisdom and kindness, and never wavering in your obedience to Allah. And let it remind you that no matter how strong the deception, the mercy of Allah is always within reach for those who repent and return to Him.

Did they not see that it could not return to them any speech and that it did not possess for them any harm or benefit?

They said, "We will never cease being devoted to the calf until Moses returns to us."
92قَالَ يَا هَارُونُ مَا مَنَعَكَ إِذْ رَأَيْتَهُمْ ضَلُّوا
[Moses] said, "O Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them going astray,
