Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- لَن نَّبْرَحَ — "We will not cease" or "We will never stop."
- عَاكِفِينَ — "Devotedly staying" or "remaining in constant worship and dedication."
- يَرْجِعَ إِلَيْنَا مُوسَى — "Until Moses returns to us."
Tafsir (Explanation):
When Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) went to the appointed meeting with his Lord on Mount Tur, his people, the Children of Israel, fell into a grave error. A man named As-Samiri led them astray by crafting a golden calf from their ornaments and making it emit a sound like a cow's mooing. He told them, "This is your god and the god of Musa, but Musa forgot."
When Prophet Harun (Aaron, peace be upon him), who was left as their leader, admonished them and warned them against this terrible sin, they replied with stubbornness and defiance: "We will not cease to be devoted to this calf," meaning they insisted on remaining in constant worship of it, "until Musa returns to us." They did not say they would stop when Musa returned to guide them; rather, they arrogantly clung to their misguidance, refusing to listen to the truth brought by Harun. They preferred their own desires over the clear command of Allah, and they even challenged the authority of Musa himself by waiting for his return while persisting in their sin.
This verse highlights the depth of their deviation and the weakness of their faith. Despite witnessing the miracles of Musa and the parting of the sea, they quickly fell into idolatry when he was away for just a short time. Their statement reveals a dangerous mindset: they were not seeking the truth but were instead attached to their own whims, and they used the absence of their prophet as an excuse to persist in falsehood.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This story carries a profound lesson for every believer. It shows how easily the heart can be deceived when it is not firmly rooted in the remembrance of Allah and the guidance of His messengers. The Children of Israel had seen the greatest signs, yet their faith was superficial because it was tied to the presence of Musa rather than to the true worship of Allah alone.
As Muslims, we must learn from this: our faith should not be dependent on the presence of scholars, leaders, or any human being. Our connection must be directly with Allah, through sincere worship, constant remembrance, and adherence to the Qur'an and the Sunnah. When trials come, or when we feel alone, we must not waver. Instead, we should increase our reliance on Allah and seek strength in His guidance. The devil is ever ready to exploit moments of weakness, just as he exploited the absence of Musa to lead the people astray. So hold firmly to the rope of Allah, and never let your devotion be diverted from the One who created you and sustains you. Indeed, true honor and peace lie in submitting to Allah alone, and in following the path of His beloved Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), until we meet our Lord.
