Key Words and Their Meanings:
- أَصْحَابُ مَدْيَنَ (Companions of Madyan): The people of the town of Madyan, to whom the Prophet Shu’ayb (peace be upon him) was sent.
- فَأَمْلَيْتُ (I gave respite): I delayed their punishment and granted them more time, giving them a chance to repent.
- نَكِيرِ (My disapproval/denial): My rejection of their disbelief and My severe punishment that followed as a result.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) continues to console His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and to strengthen his heart in the face of his people's rejection. Just as the disbelievers of Makkah denied the Prophet, so too did the nations before them deny their messengers. Allah mentions the people of Madyan, who rejected the Prophet Shu’ayb, and then He mentions that Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) was also denied—by Pharaoh and his people.
Yet, despite all this denial and disbelief, Allah did not hasten His punishment upon them immediately. Rather, He gave them a long period of respite—time to reflect, to repent, and to return to the truth. This is a manifestation of His immense mercy and patience. But when they persisted in their arrogance and continued in their transgression, He seized them with a punishment that was undeniable and overwhelming.
Then Allah asks a rhetorical question: "How was My disapproval?" This is a call to reflect and to take heed. The answer is clear: His disapproval was severe, just, and decisive. Their destruction was a testimony to the truth of the messengers and the falsehood of their deniers. The very places where they once lived in power and comfort became lessons for those who would come after them.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder and a warning to all who reject the messengers of Allah. It teaches us that Allah’s patience is vast, but His justice is certain. No one who persists in disbelief and oppression will escape His grasp. At the same time, it is a source of hope—for the doors of repentance remain open during the period of respite, and Allah’s mercy is greater than His wrath for those who turn back to Him.
A Da’wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of Allah’s justice and mercy. He does not rush to punish, even when He is denied and disobeyed. He gives you time—every single day you wake up is a new opportunity to return to Him, to correct your path, and to embrace the truth. Do not be deceived by the delay in punishment, for it is not a sign of neglect, but rather an invitation to repent. And when Allah does take action, His taking is firm and unmatched. Let the stories of the past nations be a lesson for you: their power, their wealth, and their numbers did not protect them when the decree of Allah came. So hasten to the mercy of your Lord before the inevitable comes, and be among those who listen and obey. The Qur’an is a living message—its warnings are for you, and its promises are for you. Will you not be among those who succeed?
