Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Qawmu Ibrāhīm (The people of Abraham): The nation of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him), including the people of Babylon who rejected his call to monotheism and broke the idols.
- Qawmu Lūṭ (The people of Lot): The nation of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him), the people of Sodom who were destroyed for their grave sins and their rejection of his message.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Exalted be He) continues to console His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by reminding him that he is not alone in facing rejection and denial from his people. Just as the Quraysh disbelieved in you, O Muhammad, so too did the people of Abraham disbelieve in Abraham, and the people of Lot disbelieve in Lot. These nations rejected their messengers with arrogance and stubbornness, yet Allah did not hasten their punishment immediately. Instead, He granted them respite and delayed their reckoning, giving them time to reflect and repent. But when they persisted in their transgression and refused to heed the warnings, Allah seized them with a mighty punishment — a punishment that utterly destroyed them and left no trace of their former power and prosperity. This serves as a powerful lesson: the delay in punishment is not a sign of neglect, but rather a manifestation of divine mercy that ultimately turns into severe justice for those who persist in disbelief.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this divine pattern throughout history. The people of Abraham and the people of Lot were given time — time to think, time to change, time to return to their Lord. Yet they wasted that precious gift and continued in their ways. Today, Allah grants you life, health, and opportunity. Every breath you take is an invitation to turn back to Him. Do not be deceived by the delay of punishment, for Allah is patient but His justice is certain. The stories of these nations are not mere tales of the past; they are living signs for those who reflect. Let the fate of those who rejected their prophets be a warning to you, and let the mercy of Allah that grants you time be a motivation for you to hasten to His obedience. Embrace Islam with a sincere heart, for it is the path of all the prophets — from Abraham and Lot to Muhammad (peace be upon them all) — and it is the only path that leads to eternal success in this life and the Hereafter.
