Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah — the Exalted — reminds us of a beautiful scene from the lives of the believers who came before us. He says: "Indeed, there was a group of My servants who used to say: 'Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You are the Best of the merciful.'"
These were sincere believers who recognized their weakness and their need for Allah's forgiveness and mercy. They did not rely on their own deeds or boast about their worship; rather, they humbly turned to their Creator, acknowledging their faith in Him and then immediately asking for His pardon and compassion. Their supplication was simple yet profound: they combined *īmān* (faith) with *istighfār* (seeking forgiveness) and *raḥmah* (mercy). This is the hallmark of true believers — they never feel self-sufficient, and they always return to Allah with humility, no matter how much good they have done.
The phrase "and You are the Best of the merciful" is a declaration of Allah's absolute perfection in mercy. No one can match His mercy, for His mercy encompasses everything and is free from any flaw or limitation. By saying this, the believers were not merely praising Allah; they were also expressing their complete trust that His mercy is greater than their sins, and that His forgiveness is more expansive than their mistakes.
This verse also carries a profound lesson for us today: the door of repentance and mercy is always open. No matter how far we have strayed, Allah invites us to call upon Him with the same words — to affirm our faith, seek His forgiveness, and ask for His mercy. He does not reject the one who turns to Him sincerely. Indeed, in the following verses of this chapter, Allah describes how He answered their call and granted them Paradise — a reward for their patience and their beautiful supplication.
So, dear reader, let this verse be a source of hope and encouragement. Whenever you feel overwhelmed by your sins or distant from Allah, remember this simple yet powerful du'a. Say it with a sincere heart, and trust that the Best of the merciful is always ready to forgive, to embrace, and to elevate you. Islam is not a religion of despair; it is a religion of endless hope in the boundless mercy of Allah. Let your tongue be moist with this supplication, and let your heart be filled with certainty that Allah hears and answers.
