Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • يُؤْتُونَ مَا آتَوا — They give what they give; they perform acts of charity, obedience, and righteousness, such as Zakat, voluntary donations, prayers, and other good deeds.
  • وَجِلَةٌ — Trembling, fearful, or anxious hearts; a state of profound awe and apprehension.
  • أَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ رَاجِعُونَ — Because they are certain of their return to their Lord for judgment.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse describes a remarkable category of believers — those who strive earnestly in acts of goodness and righteousness, giving charity, performing prayers, and drawing near to Allah through every noble deed. Yet, despite their sincere efforts, their hearts remain filled with a gentle, reverent fear — not the fear of a doubter, but the fear of a lover who worries whether their offering has been accepted. They tremble inwardly, thinking: "Has my deed been received? Will it weigh in my favor on the Day I stand before my Lord?"

This fear stems from their profound awareness that they will surely return to Allah. They know with certainty that every action, hidden or public, will be laid bare before Him. This certainty does not paralyze them; rather, it fuels their devotion. They give more, pray more, and serve more — all while their hearts beat with humility, never becoming arrogant about their worship, never feeling that they have done enough.

These are the people who combine action with sincerity, effort with humility. They do not rely on their deeds for salvation — for no deed is ever sufficient before Allah's majesty — but they hope in His mercy while fearing His justice. This beautiful balance is the hallmark of true faith: to work tirelessly for the Hereafter, yet to remain ever-conscious that ultimate acceptance rests solely with Allah.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, look at the beauty of this Quranic description! These believers are not those who merely perform rituals mechanically; they are those whose hearts are alive, connected to their Lord. Their fear is not a fear of punishment alone — it is a fear born of love and reverence, a fear that their beloved might not accept their gift.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson: true worship is not about quantity alone, but about quality of heart. A small deed done with a trembling, sincere heart can outweigh mountains of careless actions. So, when you give in charity, pray, or do any good, let your heart be present. Feel the awe of standing before Allah. And know that this very fear — this humble awareness — is itself a sign of faith and a cause for Allah's mercy.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The fire of Hell will not touch a believer who weeps out of fear of Allah until his milk returns to the udder" — an impossible metaphor, showing how rare and precious such fear is. Yet Allah promises that those who combine action with this reverent fear are among the foremost in Paradise.

So, strive in good deeds, but never feel self-sufficient. Let your heart remain soft, your hope in Allah's mercy strong, and your fear of His rejection ever-present. For it is precisely this state — giving while trembling — that opens the doors of divine acceptance and draws you closer to the gardens of eternal bliss.
