Key Words and Phrases:
- يُسَارِعُونَ (yusāri‘ūn) – They hasten, race, and compete with one another in doing good deeds without delay or hesitation.
- الْخَيْرَاتِ (al-khayrāt) – All forms of goodness, righteousness, and virtuous actions that draw one closer to Allah.
- سَابِقُونَ (sābiqūn) – Those who are foremost, outstripping others in the pursuit of good; they lead the way rather than lag behind.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes the magnificent character of the believers who possess the qualities mentioned in the preceding verses—those who are humble in their prayers, turn away from idle talk, give charity, guard their chastity, and keep their trusts and promises. Allah says about them: "Those are the ones who hasten to all that is good, and they are foremost in attaining it."
They do not merely do good deeds when they feel like it or when circumstances force them; rather, they actively race toward every opportunity for righteousness. Their hearts are so connected to their Lord that obedience becomes their natural instinct, and they compete with one another in acts of worship, charity, kindness, and every form of excellence. They do not wait to be told or reminded—they take the initiative.
The phrase "and they are foremost in attaining it" means that they are not only quick in their actions but also excel in their quality. They are the forerunners who reach the rewards of Allah's pleasure and Paradise before others, because their sincerity, devotion, and consistency elevate them to the highest ranks. Their good deeds are not done for show or worldly gain, but purely for the sake of Allah, and this is why they outpace everyone else in the journey toward eternal success.
A Call to Action:
Dear Muslim, look at the beautiful description Allah gives of His righteous servants! They are not lazy or procrastinating when it comes to goodness—they rush toward it with love and enthusiasm. Imagine the joy of being among those who are described as "foremost" in the sight of Allah! Every prayer you offer, every kind word you speak, every helping hand you extend, and every sin you avoid is a step in this race. Do not let Shaytan deceive you into delaying good deeds or thinking that you have plenty of time. Today is your opportunity to be among the sābiqūn—those who lead the way to Paradise. Open your heart to this beautiful path, and let your life be a constant competition in goodness, for the prize is nothing less than the pleasure of your Lord and the everlasting gardens of bliss.
