Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Ākhirah (الآخرة): The Hereafter — the eternal life after death, including the Resurrection, the Reckoning, and the ultimate abode of Paradise or Hellfire.
- Al-Ṣirāṭ (الصراط): The Straight Path — the clear and upright way of Islam, the path of truth, justice, and divine guidance.
- Nākibūn (ناكِبون): Those who deviate, turn aside, or swerve away from something, deliberately veering off course.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse draws a sharp and profound contrast between two groups of people: those who believe in the Hereafter and those who do not. Allah informs us that those who refuse to believe in the Hereafter — who deny the Resurrection, the Reckoning, and the rewards and punishments that await them — are those who have strayed far from the Straight Path. They have turned away from the clear road of Islam, which leads to eternal success, and instead have taken crooked, winding paths that lead only to destruction and the Fire.
The connection between belief in the Hereafter and following the Straight Path is inseparable. When a person truly believes that they will stand before their Lord and be held accountable for every deed — the weight of an atom of good and the weight of an atom of evil — their heart becomes anchored in obedience, and their steps remain firm upon the path of righteousness. But when this belief is absent, the soul loses its compass. The person becomes like a ship without a rudder, drifting with every wave of desire, every whisper of temptation, and every fleeting worldly pleasure. They deviate from the path of truth and incline toward falsehood, error, and transgression.
This verse is a gentle yet firm reminder that the Hereafter is not a distant myth or an abstract concept — it is the ultimate reality. The one who lives with this reality in mind walks with purpose, patience, and sincerity. They know that this world is but a fleeting moment, a planting ground for the eternal harvest. Meanwhile, the one who denies it lives carelessly, chasing illusions, and ends up lost in the wilderness of their own desires.
A Da'wah Reflection:
O dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. The Straight Path is not a narrow, difficult road — it is the path of peace, balance, and true success. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has not left you to wander blindly. He has sent the Qur'an as a light, the Prophet ﷺ as a guide, and the promise of the Hereafter as a motivation that transforms your ordinary days into acts of worship. When you believe in the Hereafter, your prayers become a conversation with your Creator, your charity becomes an investment for eternity, and your patience in hardship becomes a treasure that will never decay.
Do not let the fleeting pleasures of this world deceive you. The Hereafter is coming — it is nearer to you than you think. And the One who created you, who knows your every thought and deed, has prepared for His believing servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart can imagine. So turn to Him now, before the appointed time arrives, and walk firmly upon His Straight Path. It is the path of the Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous — and what an excellent company they are!
