Word Meanings:
- "Bal" (بَلْ): This particle indicates a shift or correction, moving from one point to another—here, from the reality of Allah's signs to the stubborn response of the disbelievers.
- "Qālū" (قَالُوا): "They said"—referring to the disbelievers of Makkah who rejected the message of resurrection.
- "Mithl mā qāla" (مِثْلَ مَا قَالَ): "The like of what was said"—meaning they repeated the same words and sentiments.
- "Al-Awwalūn" (الأَوَّلُونَ): "The former ones"—referring to the earlier nations of disbelievers, such as ʿĀd, Thamūd, and Pharaoh's people, who denied their prophets and the Day of Judgment.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Exalted be He) tells us about the stubbornness of the disbelievers of Makkah. When they were presented with the clear signs of Allah's power—such as the creation of the heavens and the earth, the sending of rain, and the promise of resurrection—they did not reflect or reason. Instead, they simply repeated the same words that the disbelieving nations before them had uttered. They said, just as ʿĀd, Thamūd, and others said before them: "When we die and become dust and bones, will we really be raised again? This is a promise we have heard before, from our forefathers—it is nothing but tales of the ancients!" (see the following verses). They did not bring any new argument or evidence; they merely echoed the denial of their predecessors, showing that their hearts were sealed with the same arrogance and blindness.
This verse highlights a profound truth: disbelief is not a matter of intellect but of the heart. The former nations had witnessed miracles and signs far greater than what the Quraysh saw, yet they still rejected the truth. The disbelievers of Makkah followed in their footsteps, not because the proof was lacking, but because they preferred to cling to the ways of their ancestors rather than submit to their Lord.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this verse. How often do we, too, repeat the words of those before us without thinking? The Qur'an challenges us to use our reason, to look at the universe around us, and to recognize the Creator who brought it all into being. The resurrection is not a fairy tale—it is a certainty that Allah has promised, and His promise is true. Do not be like those who closed their eyes to the truth and merely said, "We found our fathers upon a way, and we are guided by their footsteps." Instead, open your heart to the light of faith, for the Qur'an is a mercy and a guidance for those who seek the truth. Allah calls you to success in this life and the next—so answer His call with sincerity, and you will find peace that the deniers of old never knew.
