Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Yuḥyī (يُحْيِي): He gives life — bringing living beings into existence from nothingness.
  • Yumīt (يُمِيتُ): He causes death — taking away life after it has been granted.
  • Ikhtilāf al-layl wa al-nahār (اخْتِلَافُ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ): The alternation and succession of night and day — their varying lengths, darkness, and light.
  • Taʿqilūn (تَعْقِلُون): You use your intellect and reason to reach sound conclusions.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

In this profound verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) declares His exclusive and absolute power over life and death — the two most fundamental realities of human existence. He alone gives life from nothing, and He alone causes death after life has been granted. No one else shares this authority, and no one can delay or hasten these moments. This is a direct call to recognize His sole sovereignty over creation.

Furthermore, Allah draws our attention to the alternation of night and day — a phenomenon we witness every single moment of our lives. The night comes with its darkness and stillness, and the day follows with its light and activity. Sometimes the night is longer, sometimes shorter; sometimes the day is extended, sometimes brief. This perfect, unbroken system operates with such precision that it never fails, never delays, and never conflicts. It is a living sign of the Creator's wisdom, power, and meticulous planning.

Then Allah poses a profound question: "Do you not then use your intellect?" This is not a mere rhetorical question — it is an invitation to reflect deeply. When you see a beautiful piece of art, you know there is an artist. When you see a perfectly designed building, you know there is an architect. So how can you see this magnificent universe — with its intricate systems of life, death, and the ceaseless dance of night and day — and not recognize its Creator? How can you witness these signs and not believe in His oneness and submit to Him?

This verse is a beautiful reminder that faith is not blind — it is rooted in reason, observation, and reflection. The Qur'an repeatedly calls us to think, ponder, and use our intellect to arrive at the truth. The alternation of night and day is not a random accident; it is a divine arrangement that sustains human life, agriculture, sleep, work, and worship. It is a mercy from Allah that He has placed before our eyes every day and every night, so that we may never forget Him.

So, dear reader, let your intellect lead you to the truth. Let the rising sun and the falling night remind you of your Creator. Let every breath you take — a gift of life from Him — remind you that He alone gives life and causes death. And let this awareness fill your heart with gratitude, humility, and love for the One who manages all affairs with perfect wisdom. Indeed, in these signs are clear proofs for those who reflect — so be among those who truly understand and believe.
