Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "In kāda" — He almost, or he came very close to.
  • "Layuḍillunā" — To turn us away, to divert us, or to lead us astray from.
  • "Ālihatinā" — Our gods (their idols and false deities).
  • "Lawlā an ṣabarnā" — Were it not that we remained steadfast and patient.
  • "Aḍalla sabīlan" — Who is more astray in path, or who has strayed further from the truth.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The disbelievers of Makkah, when they saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) calling them to the worship of Allah alone, would mock him and say to one another: "This man has almost led us away from our gods! He came so close to turning us aside from the worship of our idols through the strength of his arguments and the clarity of his proofs — were it not that we held firm and remained patient upon our worship of them."

In this statement, they unknowingly testified to the power and persuasiveness of the Prophet's message. They admitted that his call was so compelling, his evidence so overwhelming, that it nearly pulled them away from their false deities. Yet, their "patience" was not a virtue — it was stubbornness upon falsehood, clinging to inherited ignorance rather than embracing the truth that stood before them.

Then comes the divine response — a stern and certain threat: "And they will soon know, when they see the punishment, who is more astray in path." On the Day of Resurrection, when the reality of their error becomes undeniable, and they witness the torment prepared for them, they will realize with utter clarity who was truly misguided — was it the Prophet and his followers, who worshipped the Creator of the heavens and the earth, or was it they themselves, who worshipped carved stones that could neither benefit nor harm?

A Da'wah Reflection:

How beautiful is this verse in turning the tables on those who mock the truth! The disbelievers thought they were being patient in protecting their false religion, but in reality, they were merely delaying the inevitable. The truth is not measured by the number of its followers, nor by the persistence of its opponents. It is measured by the evidence it carries and the guidance it brings.

Dear reader, reflect on your own life: Are you "patient" upon something simply because your forefathers did it, or because you have examined it and found it true? The Qur'an challenges you to think, to question, and to seek the truth with an open heart. The Prophet's call was so powerful that even his enemies admitted it nearly swayed them — imagine what it can do for a sincere seeker!

Do not wait until you see the punishment to realize who was truly astray. Open your heart to the message of Islam today, and you will find a path that leads to peace in this life and eternal bliss in the next. The choice is yours — and the time is now.

📜 Verse 40-44 — Al-Furqan

And they have already come upon the town which was showered with a rain of evil. So have they not seen it? But they are not expecting resurrection.
And when they see you, [O Muhammad], they take you not except in ridicule, [saying], "Is this the one whom Allah has sent as a messenger?
He almost would have misled us from our gods had we not been steadfast in [worship of] them." But they are going to know, when they see the punishment, who is farthest astray in [his] way.
Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire? Then would you be responsible for him?
Or do you think that most of them hear or reason? They are not except like livestock. Rather, they are [even] more astray in [their] way.
