Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Zubur (زُبُرِ): The plural of *zabur* (book/scripture), referring to the written scriptures revealed to the earlier prophets, such as the Torah, the Psalms, and other divine books.
  • Al-Awwaleen (الأَوَّلِين): The earlier nations and communities who received revelation before the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse affirms a profound truth: the mention of this Qur'an—its revelation, its message, and its tidings—is firmly recorded in the scriptures of the earlier prophets. It was not a novel or unexpected event; rather, the previous divine books had already foretold the coming of this final revelation and testified to its truth. The Torah, the Psalms, and other heavenly scriptures all pointed to the arrival of a final messenger and a comprehensive book that would confirm and complete the truth they carried. Thus, the Qur'an is not an innovation but the fulfillment of a divine promise woven through the fabric of all prior revelation.

The verse serves as a reassurance to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and to believers: the message you uphold is not alien to human history—it is the culmination of a long chain of divine guidance. The earlier prophets and their followers awaited this moment, and their scriptures bore witness to it. This also stands as a challenge to those who rejected the Qur'an: if you truly believe in the earlier books, you will find in them the very confirmation of what is being recited to you now.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder this: the Qur'an you hold today was not sent in a vacuum. It is the final chapter of a story that began with Adam, continued through Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus (peace be upon them all), and reached its perfection with the Seal of the Prophets, Muhammad (peace be upon him). Every earlier scripture was a lamp lighting the path toward this ultimate guidance. When you open the Qur'an, you are not merely reading a book—you are connecting with a divine thread that has run through all of human history. This is an invitation to embrace the truth with an open heart, for the signs of its authenticity are etched in the very books you may already hold sacred. Let this verse strengthen your certainty and draw you closer to the beauty of Islam, a faith that completes and confirms all that came before it.
