Key Words and Their Meanings:
- أَرْجِهْ (Arjih): Delay him, postpone his matter, or give him respite.
- وَأَخَاهُ (wa akhāhu): And his brother (Hārūn/Aaron).
- حَاشِرِينَ (ḥāshirīn): Gatherers; people who are sent to collect and assemble others—here, specifically, those who would gather the most skilled magicians from across the land.
Explanation of the Verse:
When Prophet Mūsā (Moses, peace be upon him) stood before Pharaoh and his court, calling them to the worship of Allah alone and demonstrating the truth of his prophethood through the miracle of his staff turning into a serpent, the chiefs and nobles of Pharaoh’s court were shaken. Yet, instead of submitting to the truth, they resorted to a cunning and deceptive strategy. They said to Pharaoh: "Do not rush to punish Mūsā or his brother Hārūn, and do not be hasty in dealing with them. Give them time and respite, and in the meantime, send messengers and officers to all the cities and towns of your kingdom—especially the provinces of Egypt—to gather and summon every highly skilled and masterful magician. Let them come before you so that they may confront Mūsā with their own magic and overpower him with their arts."
Their intention was clear: they wanted to turn the confrontation into a public spectacle, a contest of magic, hoping that the magicians would defeat Mūsā and thus undermine his message in the eyes of the people. They believed that by delaying and preparing a grand show of sorcery, they could preserve their authority and crush this new call to monotheism. Little did they know that the power of Allah is far greater than any trickery or illusion, and that His truth will always prevail over falsehood, no matter how well it is organized or how many forces are rallied against it.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This scene from the life of Mūsā teaches us a profound lesson: the enemies of truth often rely on worldly means—gathering supporters, resources, and elaborate plans—to fight the message of Allah. But as believers, we must never be intimidated by their numbers, their skills, or their apparent strength. Allah’s promise is true: He supports His righteous servants, and no scheme of the disbelievers can ever succeed against His will. When you face challenges in your own life, remember that the same Allah who gave Mūsā victory over the greatest magicians of his time is with you today. Put your trust in Him, hold firmly to His guidance, and know that the end belongs to the pious. The Qur’an is filled with such stories to strengthen our hearts and remind us that truth, though it may be tested, is never defeated. So, be among those who stand firm in faith, and let the example of the prophets inspire you to patience, courage, and unwavering reliance on Allah.
