Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- سَحَّارٍ (Sahhar): An intensified form meaning a master sorcerer, one who is highly skilled and proficient in the art of magic.
- عَلِيمٍ ('Aleem): Deeply knowledgeable, referring here to one who possesses extensive expertise and cunning in the practice of sorcery.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, we see the advisors and courtiers of Pharaoh responding to his demand after Moses (peace be upon him) challenged him to a confrontation. They advised Pharaoh not to rush into a direct conflict with Moses and his brother Aaron, but rather to postpone the matter and gather the most formidable sorcerers from across the land. They said: "Delay the matter of Moses and Aaron, and send messengers to all the cities to summon every highly skilled and deeply knowledgeable sorcerer." Their intention was to bring together the absolute best in the field—those whose mastery of illusion and trickery surpassed all others—so that they could defeat Moses publicly and decisively, thereby crushing his message and preserving Pharaoh's authority in the eyes of the people.
This reflects the arrogance of Pharaoh's court, who believed that the truth of Moses' miraculous signs could be countered with mere human trickery. They thought that by assembling the finest magicians, they could overwhelm the clear miracles of Allah with deception. Yet, as the story unfolds, Allah would demonstrate that His power prevails over all human artifice, and that no amount of worldly skill can stand against the truth He sends.
Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: the enemies of truth will always marshal their best resources—whether intellectual, financial, or social—to oppose the message of Allah. But history repeatedly proves that their efforts are futile. When you stand firm upon the truth, Allah grants you victory, just as He did for Moses. So, never be intimidated by the apparent strength or expertise of those who oppose Islam. Their "magic" is nothing but illusion, while the truth of Allah is solid and enduring. Trust in Allah, and He will make your path clear and your victory certain, no matter how many "expert sorcerers" gather against you.
